Black Crowes - suggestions?

If someone was just starting to get into the Black Crowes, what CD would be the best to start with? Or is a greatest hits release the way to go? Or a single must have release?

Shake Your MoneyMaker from 1990 is a great album and a great place to start! I think this album rocks hard! Just my 2 cents...features the hit songs Hard To Handle and Jealous Again.

The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion: their best album.
Shake Your Money Maker: their most commercial record, but very very good.
Amorica: their most intresting album and my favorite, but not for beginners.

Lions & Three Snakes are also very decent albums.
By Your Side rocks, but nothing more... although Virtue and Vice is one of their best songs IMHO.

The Black crowes Live cd isn't bad either and the live cd with jmmy Page is awesome.

In other words... buy what you want... you can't go wrong.

Did I read that they cover some Stones stuff on their live CD? If so, what songs? How is that rated as far as live recordings go?

Live DVD comes out on March 21. Should be a good visual and audio document of the Crowes for beginners and old fans like me. I read that the sound is great. Has a good mixture of older and later songs and some covers. Cant wait.

Just made a 3 discs compilation of 2005 covers with Instant Live recordings.
Covers are cool but their own stuff is what I want to hear most.

Their second album is the best one, great production, great solos, great rnr. Their live album is, in my opinion, really bad: bad production, bad sound, bad moment for the band. There are really good boots that show what they can do live. Waiting for the dvd...

The best place to start is their greatest hits CD, which can be found at [www.amazon.com]

It has all the best stuff from their first five studio albums. Their since-released sixth studio album Lions is my least favorite of theirs, anyway.

Beyond the greatest hits, my favorites are Southern Harmony, By Your Side (this one is very under rated) and the live album with Jimmy Page.

I remember I was really into the Crowes when they first came out in 1990 because there was just about no good rock from new artists then (Nirvana and Pearl Jam were still almost two years away). The only time I saw them in concert was when they opened for ZZ Top in 1990 (I had free press passes) and they were excellent. They played a rockin' version of Lennon's Instant Karma.

There was a "meet the band" event afterward and I was so hoping to meet the Crowes, but only met ZZ Top. They are very polite, and very short. Their beards were so thin they were seethrough up close - and this was 16 years ago!

I did meet the Crowes' keyboardist Ed Harsch in '00 in Detriot when I went there to see The Who. Page and the Crowes played there the next night, and me and my friends spent quite a while after the show trying to track down any of the Who, the Crowes or Page. We had to settle for the Crowes keyboardist in the lobby bar of their hotel. Nice guy, although he's creepy as hell looking!

I didn't stay in Detriot because I had tickets to catch Page and the Crowes down the line, but unfortunately the last half of the tour got cancelled because of Page's bad back.

More Crowes memories:

Southern Harmony had just come out in the fall of '92 when I was 22, a few days before my college graduation party. I remember that CD got blasted a few times that night in the hotel suite I rented. The police came a few times to tell us our music was too loud and there were two many people in there (about 50 in the space of a medium-sized apartment), but they never shut us down. They must have been Black Crowes fans.

Who is in the Crowes these days, apart from Chris and Rich Robinson? If I'm remebering right, their original drummer Steve Gorman has rejoined, as has original guitarist Marc Ford. And Ed Harsch who has been a member since the second album is still there. Anybody know who is playing bass now?

Sven Pipien (who played also on "live at the greek" w. J.Page).

Never understood why so many people think "Southern Harmony" is their best album, I don't really like it.

Their best album is maybe "The Band Sessions" (recorded in May '97), never released, but available for trading. Awesome stuff !!!!
I have also a B-sides 2 discs compilation with some of their best stuff.

My favorite one is "Three Snakes" but I'd say go with "Shake Your Money Maker" first.

That's actually funny, as they don't have much in common with the Stones. They are much more influenced by early 70's Faces and Led Zepelin, and also Stax and Motown. They are fans of the Stones, but that's it.

I think Amorica is their best album by the way.
