Flip the Switch

Was listening to No Security the other day and I was reminded how much I love this song. The B2B tour (along with the ensuing NS tour) found Keith at the absolute pinnacle of his game, IMO. The amazing guitar work on this song is proof of that.

I think this song might turn out to be the last truly great KR rocker. I find RJ and ONNYA to be dull and lifeless by comparison.

Other opinions?

RJ is a bore, IMO. No discernible riff...nothing memorable at all. Throwaway vocal, to boot. FTS has guts - best combination of Jagger vocs and KR riffing in recent memory.

No mutton here - but thanks!

flip is way better. rj sounds kinda crappy live. like the lyrics better, too. I take it as Mick talking about mortality and saying I'm getting older and closer to death so what! Bring it on! Or maybe I'm wrong.

1. Flip The Switch

2. Oh No, Not You Again

3. Rough Justice

1. Rough Justice, Live and Stodio, by far 2. FTS, 3. ONNYA

>> I take it as Mick talking about mortality <<

i take it as a sequel to Midnight Rambler. it's hilarious - and a freakin great number too.

I am much more into turning up Rough Justice or almost anything from the new album. Flip The Switch had a great riff but got buried in overproduction like most of Bridges.

I also think that FTS is the last great Stones rocker, RJ and ONNYA are very good, but not great IMO.

i really like the live version of FTS : keith's solos are very good on this song

RJ is a really great song, but i think onnya isn't as good as the two others

Flip was (is) great on Bridges, but never truly convinced me live, mainly due to Jagger's vocals (flat on the chorus).

Love the riff, anyway, esp the variations it receives throughout the song.

I like each of the songs mentioned equally. In each of them Keith is great! By the way, what's the exact meaning of the sentence "Flip the switch"?

"got to be worked on
don't have no bark nor bite..."

means turning on the "electric chair"

I read somewhere that it was Keith's take on the eletric chair. Cool song, I like the oriental sounding riff at teh beginning.

I'm with you, T&A. I loved Keith's relentless riffing on Flip THe Switch. One thing I really liked about the B2B tour was not just that new songs were included, but they were actually highlights of the show! (FTS, Saint, and Out Of Control; not so much ASMB, however!)

I would like to see them dust FTS off and bring it out again!

I really implore folks who haven't listened to NS in awhile - crank up FTS and tell me Keith has ever sounded more razor sharp in his playing.

don't have NS... and only 1 boot from that tour (MSG), but I like the studio version. It's the witty lyrics that make it for me. Any sense of how many of them keith wrote? I had assumed jagger wrote them, but seeing how witless most of his lyrics have been in recent years... maybe not.

I think the song also has the perfect stones' ensemble backing vocal style. "[what's the word?] me up!" They sound like thuggish lads, which thankfully takes away from the slickness of the rest of the production.

This is one song where the live version totally blows the studio version out of the water. Flip the switch on the BTB version and crank No Security instead!

(incidentally, No Security is an excellent live disc 'thru and thru' - I'm especially fond of The Last Time and Out of Control.)

nikki:

yes, I was truly astounded how much I enjoyed listening to NS - been a couple of years probably. I think was struck me most was how much better KR was in those days - not all that long ago. He was precise and deft with his riffing and leads. I fear his arthritis has really taken a mighty toll of late....

No security has only one redeeming feature and that is the track listing, which at least avoids the usual warhorses. Otherwise I think it is very forgettable. I listened to it again this week and found it very disappointing - especially Mathews completey wrecking memory hotel.
Flip the switch is ok but you have to be kidding about Rough Justice and ONNYA etc. Those two are great stones rockers, and knock Flip into oblivion for me.

in my opinion flip the switch suffers from some bad mick jagger-isms. the songs itself and the riff are decent, but the lyrics are kind of a joke, and the delivery sound lame to me.
flip the switch is one of their better tunes in recent years, but in a rare instance, i must say jagger ruins this one for me.
toothbrush and all that shit?
come on

The lyrics are Keith's, not Mick's.....

yer not gonna tell me that ONNYA and/or RJ are lyrical masterpieces, are ya?

Love FTS. Very original. RJ is more contrived, mixing licks from "Round the Plynth" and "brown sugar" to recreate "that 70s sound."

Playing or overdubbing?
