The Gaines idea didn't work because the music was horrible. While not a real Brooks fan is was a great performer and his music and concerts have alot of rock spectacle mixed in. He likes rock and roll and pop music has worked with KISS etc.
I was expecting some good stuff and was looking foward to see what it was going to be. But we all know it was unlistenable

TERRY KATH ("CHICAGO" GTRST., SINGER, HE AND "JIMI HENDRIX" WERE PALS/KATH SANG ON "MAKE ME SMILE", AND "COLOUR MY WORLD" AND OTHER "CHICAGO" HITS) (1978) (ACCIDENT WHILE ALLEGEDLY PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE)

Didn't Elton John's career really suffer when he came out of the closet in the late 70's?

Gazza, I know he's still very popular, but not like he was. It became very uncool to be an Elton fan around that time. Please remember that I live in a very rural area. Back in those days people really weren't as enlightened. Especially in south Georgia.

Maybe the albums just sucked after Rock Of The Westies.

I'd say Lennon's worst career move was moving to New York!

-Motley Crue firing Vince Neil (I love the album without him but it didn't do good business)

-Mick Taylor leaving the Stones

-Billy Squier's "Rock Me Tonight" video

-David Lee Roth leaving Van Halen (compounded by a light pop sound on his 2nd solo album)

Too Low For Zero is a really good album IMO

The thing with this 'bad career move' debate is that some people are getting what may have been a bad career decision by an artist mixed up with when THEY think a particular artist lost the plot (even if the artist did very well out of it - the Stones hooking up with Cohl being an example. To the detriment of their artistic side certainly but theyve made an insane amount of money out of it and I doubt they're complaining)

Elton's still HUGELY popular worldwide - hes earning MILLIONS for some extended run in Vegas, has played MSG more times than ANY other artist and his tours and records still sell very well. Admitting his homosexuality didnt really hinder his career (it was hardly a big shock lets face it!) - he's also as high profile as ever (partly as a RESULT of his chosen public lifestyle) which has helped him gain publicity and money for his various charities (particularly his AIDS charities) so I would guess that he would think that 'coming out' has been of some benefit in many ways. he's not selling 10 million albums at a time like he did in the 70's but that level of success is usually fleeting for almost everyone.

Bad career moves by the Stones

Not doing Woodstock -
instead "let's do our own free concert - bigger - better - yeah. -
...oops catastrophe!

Heroin

surviving (well some might think so)

Four Stones
(not replacing Bill properly ... why f*@# about with a background replacement - Yeah ok Daryl's fine.. but surely there was an opportunity missed. Bill was
much more part of the Stones dynamic than the egos of Mick & Keith
acknowledge)
