how could there ever be? It wasnt a ticketed event. You'll never know for sure how many turned up, let alone knowing it an hour or two after the show!

An Associated Press Writer: "Fire department officials estimated the crowd was over 1 million at the show's start but that more people were coming".

É suppose tomorrow we will have more "official" estimates.

Just saw it on IORR news : "More than one million fans attended the Copacabana beach show by the Rolling Stones in Rio de Janeriro tonight. The final count of people will be available by tomorrow."

So tomorrow...

No, Rod Stewart had a larger crowd a few years ago. But they could make it into the record book of Guinness.

I don't quite get the records. Macca has the "solo performer" record at 184.000 people. And Rod has 3.5 million. Isn't Rod a solo performer as well? I'd say he is. The Stones will go in the books for "largest ever crowd for a rock BAND concert" wouldn't they? I mean: According to the weird Guiness logic.....?

Rod's show was free, I think. Whereas Macca's was a ticketed event.

I bet the 3 millionth person sitting at the very back of the very back, half a mile away from the stage, had a really good time.
BTW - what was the queue for the ladies toilets like?

Lets say the beach and the boulevard is appr. 250 mtrs wide and some 2 kms long.

So in total 500.000 sqare meters.

Say an average of 3 people per square meter, makes 1.5 million people...

McCartney's was a paid, ticketed event

Rod's concert was free, as the Stones' show was

There was a difference between the two, however.

Rod's show was a part of the New years Eve festivities, so the estimated crowd figure includes everyone who was on the beach, whether they went to the concert or not (a few million on the beach in Rio on NY Eve isnt uncommon). Rod's show therefore wasnt the 'event' that drew 3.5 million people

The Stones' show was on a specific corner of of the beach and those who were there wer in attendance for the concert, nothing else.
