I've failed as a parent
Posted by: redshift ()
Date: February 16, 2006 02:37

Last week My family ate in a restaurant (Silver Diner) with a retro theme (old diner facade, jukeboxes). In the lobby there is an LCD TV showing TV clips of performers from the 50's and 60's. As we entered a clip of Herman's Hermits was on. My 12 year old daughter asked me if they were the Rolling Stones.

For what it's worth, Peter Noone is a pretty nice guy...met him a few times in Santa Barbara (he lives there & I went to school there). He seemed quite surprised anyone, let alone a college kid would know who he was.

A few kids knocked my door a few years ago when "trick or treating" at Hallowe'en and when I opened it, one of them saw the huge framed "Urban Jungle" tour poster I have of the Stones, looked at me quizzically and asked, "Is that The Chippendales"?

I think I was more offended by the fact that they didnt know who the Stones were than the fact that I'd be the sort of person who would have a poster of a group of male strippers on display....

It's hard to believe that Joey Ramone was a fan of the Herman's Hermits....But then again he turned out alright. It's just too bad he died so young. I absolutely loved his solo album, especially the song about "spirits in my house".

Without Jann Wenner, the magazine would've been called Herman's Hermits Monthly.

Once, I think 1966, MJ was asked by a fan: "Are you Herman?" "Yeah, I'm Herman." And
so MJ signed autographs as Herman of Herman's Hermits. (Source: David Dalton's book.)

My sons gets glad when I put on the Stones in the ´car...
And kill´s the daughter´s disco.
I´m proud over them, but worried about her...
but, I have had the boys for a longer time.
My two youngest kids may still be flexible.

My oldest son met Wyman; that must be unforgettable
(he even said: "You must be Oscar, right? or slt).

At least she didn't ask if it was Usher!

As a note. My 11 year old son loves the entire Aftermath disc. My 16 year old duaghter thinks the Stones are boring.

Redshift - this must make want to re-evaluate all you have said and done as a parent...but I can tell you all may not yet be lost. My daughter regularly inflicts similar indignities on me, and yet she has come to love the Stones - shes 16 and has bought a bigger bang and shes coming to Cardiff with me in August- she knows the hits and has now started trying to nick MY CD'S - I said no way - get yer own. My 8 year old likes Baby break it down from Voodoo Lounge, so Im regarding that as a promising start - only problem is if they all want to go to the next tour I better start saving, and then some!

As a daughter who was introduced to the Rolling Stones by her dad, I gotta say that all he did was expose me and my sister to the music, just because he was tired of listening to Nancy Sinatra!! He didn't have to do much else-We've both been hooked on them since! My point is that if you want your kids to listen to the Stones, make sure they hear their best stuff but don't show how eager you are to turn them into a fan, for young kids that's a turn off..That's what I think.. When they're older, if the stones suit their taste, I guess they'll end up listening to them!

Who the f*ck is Mick Jagger?

look at it from the bright side. She will have a great future not having to spend a lot of money on the Stones touring. I don't know if Hermits tour anymore. And you know it is never to late.

Considering he was your room-mate, if I were you, I'd have been quite relieved that he didnt know who the Village People were!

I have 3 kids and they all have been listening to the Stones from the second I knew I was pregnant. If you want your kids to enjoy great music, you must introduce them to it young.

True story: I had dinner with a lady I used to work with a couple of years ago. I'm 44 and she's a couple of years older than me. When the conversation turned to music, I told her that I really liked the Stones. Her response was "what kind of music do they play?"
