A big stage is going to build in Rio - Pics !

Just arrived in Rio de Janeiro. The stage ís direct on the beach of copacabana, build on the sand. There is a bridge over the street from the Copacabana Palace Hotel. It seems that the stones will walk from the huge terrace on the first floor directly to the stage.

Looks like that pointy things on the back of the stage are from the Vertigo tour of U2. Looks like some are speakers. Is this a Stones show or U2?

Looks like there's plenty of room for the warhorses to strut their stuff.

The crowd will enjoy the warhorses! We in Brazil are not spoiled with 50 shows every tour.

I should be there in time to moor the Black Pearl just off shore and take me a long boat up to the beach.

It´s always between 27 and 31 degr. Celcius in Rio,
most often towards the latter... I follow it daily,
cause I´m a severe masoschist.

Record-breaking rock concerts

The Rolling Stones will play a free concert on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana
Beach and more than 2 million people are expected to attend, possibly
making it one of the largest crowds for a rock show.

Brazil - The Rolling Stones will play a free concert on Rio de Janeiro's
Copacabana Beach next Saturday. More than a million people are expected to
attend, which would make it one the largest crowds ever for a rock show.

Here are some other notable big shows in a single venue.

- The Guinness Book of Records says the largest free rock concert
attendance was for Rod Stewart, also on Copacabana Beach, on New Year's Eve
1994. It reportedly attracted an audience of 3.5 million people.

- The largest paying audience for a solo performer was the estimated 180
000 to 184 000 people who saw Paul McCartney in Rio's Maracana Stadium on
April 21 1990, also according to Guinness.

- About 750 000 people saw country star Garth Brooks in New York's Central
Park in August 1997.

- The United States festival organised by Apple Computer co-founder Steve
Wozniak drew 670 000 people to Devore, California, in May 1983 to see U2,
David Bowie, Willie Nelson and others.

- The legendary Woodstock Festival in upstate New York in 1969 gathered 400
000 people to see The Who, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jimi Hendrix,
the Grateful Dead and a host of others.

- A free Rolling Stones concert in London's Hyde Park in July 1969, days
after the death of guitarist Brian Jones, drew 200 000. Mick Jagger read a
Shelley poem and released hundreds of butterflies in tribute to Jones.

Great pics. How high is the stage. It does not look to be that much compared to an ordinary stadium stage.

See IORR news - iorr.org/rio - [iorr.org]

As you see this is a classic stage design. Lots of steel pipes but no large area where the wind can catch it. So it will simply blow through it. Evewn the decoration they put up I am sure are very nice to wind and not solid. But there is always a limit of course still I don't think hurricanes or storms are expected in Rio now. Just a bit cloudy at all times and very humid +34 C day and +25 C evening, +20 C early morning. That is 90 F day and 70 F evening I think.

The stage is very low. Unusual low. Probably just 6 feet or so. I.e. 2 meters. May be because they want to integrate the crowd better. High stages are usually making a distance to the crowd.

I think it is indeed very strange that the stage is so low. High stages make a distance to the crowd but it is used to make people 100 metres back see you. Usely the arena or club stages are low because it is a relativly small audince in a small room, now they have there biggest audience and they want to make the audience looke at a video screen just like everybody at home. Very strange IMHO.

The guardian newspaper reckons it will be afro-reggae as the support group for rio.

Maybe the average brasilian isn't very tall...
They dont play in the Netherlands, this time, so maybe 2 meters are enough.

My guess is that they need a "regular stage" for nice pictures on TV and on DVD
The old-fashionned high stages would have been worse picture wise.

2nd thing : the moving B-stage. They need to have a pretty sinilar heigth for both stages, and a 3-meter-high B-stage would have meant a huge empty distance between them and the audience around the B-stage.
Just my 2 cents...

IORR-

How exciting! I'm not attending the show, but I am psyched with anticipation for news about the show. This will truly be a classic, historic rock concert!!

Of course, I wonder if any rarely played songs will be performed? (a-la Knebworth on 21 Aug 1976 before 200,000). Of course, it was the Knebworth concert that provided the longest documented Rolling Stones set list: 29 songs (counting "Country Honk" bit).

I'll be in Rio in spirit...rock on!

That was 30 years ago, for a free show today, probably the usual 20 to 21 songs but don't be surprised if 18 or 19 only make the cut.

The Vegas line on more than 22 songs is 1,000,000 to 1.

in 1994 Rod Stewart had gathered 3,5 millions of people in Brazil.
But, what is it in Rio too and just for one concert ?

Apparently the rod stewart concert was on new years eve and they reckon millions gather to rio for new years eve anyway and thats why they reckon there was a record crowd for that advent?

Sicilian-

You are probably right: 20-21 songs.
I hope your wrong, but I agree with your odds!
