A good thread, Mr ohnonotyouagain and yes, I do like the White Stripes.

However, I'm afraid I'm a sucker for Keane. Every track on their debut album is either superb or excellent. No filler, no gimmicks, no fancy stage theatrics etc.

...and of course there is Ryan Adams. The greatest songwriter of his generation perhaps?

HMM, I guess everyone is different I suppose...I think they are collectively the best all around band to come out in the last 15 years...but that is just me...

first saw Jack and Meg live in May 2003, and have seen them, 8 times since... they consistently blow me away. He is such a talented and dynamic musician.

I go to alot of gigs, of todays contemporary artists, and no one comes close, in my humble opinion.

I saw Nirvana, at The Reading Festival in 1992.. they certainly had something, but Kurt Cobain as talented as Jack White??-no way.
Not in guitar playing, songwriting or producing, and certainly not as charismatic, onstage.

As is always the case, Cobain's legacy and talent has been magnified by his early death. His drug abuse, 'inner pain' and lifestyle are glamourised by a generation, and the media hyperbole that surrounded the grunge phenonemon.

Sorry Adrain L but thats bullshit, I love the White Stripes, but Kurt Cobain was a great songwriter and musician, and his songs touched people when he was still alive to an extent that Jack White never will

Interesting responses ... where to begin. Yes, Pearl Jam are under 40. I loved their first two albums but haven't been that crazy about them since. Yes, I agree that Nirvana was a better band than the White Stripes. And yeah, the Black Keys are pretty damn great. I saw them in a small club last year and they were very impressive. They may be able to give the Stripes a run for their money in a few years.

You should listen to Pearl Jam's No Code. If you didn't already. I became a fan through that album, not so much for Ten, which was a bit... much. It was just an over the top album, even though it did have some great songs. No Code was a complete 180 degrees... very understated. I appreciate that side of PJ much more.

speaking of Pearl Jam.....one of their band members (the guitarist me thinks) is a huge Stones fan and owns over 400 of their bootlegs (guess he can afford 'em)

The White Stripes are just too hyped. Yes they have some good songs. Especially the first two albums, but if you want to talk about the best band under 40 (with two people as well) the Black Keys blow them away. By the way, what about the Black Crowes ? Pearl Jam ? Chili Peppers ? Los Lobos ? Are we talking band age or band MEMBERS age ?

I have to set one thing straight: The Black Eyed Peas SUCK. It's a band that will be tottally forgotten in 10 years, and their melodies (Especially My Humps) are tunes that you dream up and sing to yourself on the way home from a party. Too easy, too lame, but DAMN Fergie is severely fuckable.

Speaking of Depends...

I saw them last year in Gdynia, Poland. The best concert I saw in 2005. Have not seen The Stones last year though It was Jack White's 30th birthday. There were his mother and wife watching the show from a balcony. He said a couple of words in Polish and the warmest that get the audience happy were: Jestem Polakiem, to jest moj kraj which means: I am Polish and this is my country, and it is as his mother is Polish...

I would rather say they're anti mtv. They are popular among youngsters but they play rock and mean, mean blues, remind me a lot of Dylan, they covered One More Cup Of Coffee on their first record, also play Dylan covers live like Love Sick for example. It is really hard to tell why they are that popular, I thought good music was dead but it is not.

Liking them or not is a matter of taste but they are extremely good, rocking and honest

There you go star...I like your post. This should show it is REALLY a matter of taste & knowledge of what is out there. Coldplay has TONS of fans...but I can't stand them. Again...a matter of taste...which is what makes this thread a bit silly, especially with the "period" statement.

Best band with members under 40, not best band that's been together less than 40 years. Sort of narrows it down, doesn't it? Lets out the Chili Peppers, Los Lobos, U2, R.E.M., Pixies, Paul Westerberg, etc., etc. Pearl Jam and the Black Crowes barely qualify, but I like the White Stripes better. And as noted, I'm a big Black Keys fan, but I don't think they are quite there yet.
