Super Bowl Dress Rehearsal Update
Posted by: autodog ()
Date: February 4, 2006 08:32

I just got in from participating in the Super Bowl half time show dress rehearsal (ok, I did stop for a cold one with some of the people that are in the half time show also). The boys, Mick, Keith, Ronnie, Charlie, Darryl, and Chuck, took the stage about an hour late but looking to be no worse for wear. Mick, Keith and Ronnie wore all black with the exception of Mick and Keiths belts, which looked to be silver/chrome studded. Mick wore black tuxedo tails covered in sequins, either black or clear, hard to tell, and looking very sharp. They played a 3 song, 12 minute set with Mick making the rounds all over the stage a couple of times, Keith making one trip around the stage and Ronnie pretty much confining himself to about a 3 square foot section of the stage.

Unfortunately the sound system didn't sound all that good. Perhaps it was geared more to television than to the in house audience? Many people that I talked to were also disappointed in the audio quality as well. There was nothing dividing the backstage area from the members of the "audience" and I managed to get around back and check out the set-up. There is one section of the stage that has 2 stairways/ladders leading up to the stage. The good news is....there is no way in hell that Aretha Franklin is getting her rather robust ass up those stairs. Let me put it another way...unless they use a heavy duty construction crane, Aretha is not appearing with the Stones at half time. She did not appear during the half time dress rehearsals at all. Chuck was on piano, and on the piano bench....alone.

While backstage I was also able to meet Darryl Jones for about 90 seconds and get a photo of him and me taken by a member of the stage crew who used my cell phone camera. What a treat that was. He was very cordial and all smiles.

I asked numerous official looking people about the set list and received a million different answers. One woman, who was with the production company, told me that they were told the setlist but, she isn't a stones fan and didn't remember any of the song titles. Another told me that They were told but they were instructed not to reveal any information about the set list. One guy with the stones crew told me that the stones were as of yet undecided as to which 3 songs they would be performing and that they would play 3 differnt songs in each of their 3 sets during the dress rehearsal...a total of nine songs. They played the first set with the "audience" in place on the field, the second set, for some reason was played with the "audience" in the tunnel leading to the field, the third set was played with the "audience again on the field.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW WHICH SONGS THE STONES WILL PLAY.....STOP READING NOW

AGAIN...IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW...STOP READING RIGHT NOW

LAST CHANCE TO TURN BACK

The Stones played the same 3 songs for all 3 dress rehearsal sets, the songs played were in order....Start Me Up....Rough Justice and...Satisfaction. During the "you make a dead man cum" line in SMU and the Male rooster reference during Rough Justice Mick simply let the mike fall away from his lips and he mouthed no words at all.

Summing it up...Start Me Up followed by Rough Justice followed by (Can't get no) Satisfaction and NO ARETHA FRANKLIN in sight.

I had an excellent spot to watch the show from, about 5 feet from the stage and just left of center stage, and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I wish all Stones fans could experience. The Stones really looked like they were enjoying themselves, I had a great time watching them live on Ford Field and I hope you enjoy watching them on television during the Super Bowl XL half time show.

If they play those three: great! One new song out of three...
that´s 33,33% od the set.

Great percentage...

just curious: weren't the people who were privileged enough to be at the rehearsals asked not to reveal the set list?

Well, I just checked and 151 people had accessed this message, and if you figure that 90 million Americans are expected to watch the Super Bowl, that still leaves 89,999,849 Americans who don't know the setlist yet.

Lets hope they don't now change it because that is the perfect set.

A very nice setlist; it was predictable, but it's good.

Simply because:

Start Me Up always works with a crowd. Stones fans or not.
Rough Justice is a new song.
Jumpin' Jack Flash is the same story as Start Me Up.

So 2 songs are warhorses but they're ok because they're GOOD warhorses. They're some of the best songs ever made in rock history.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Ronnie on SMU.

Rather:

SMU: The Stones' "sports song".
RJ: Sale booster for ABB, and a GREAT song.
JJF: Kills everyone around the globe.

I would think that instead of JJF they would play Brown Sugar because you get a great sing a long at the end with the Yeeeaaah, Yeeeaaaah, Wooooooooooooooooh part.

Cheers,
Wuudy

All I can say is that I was there, got Chuck's autograph and...

THEY DID NOT PLAY JJF.

Maybe autodog had a few too many cold ones after the rehersal.

What's going on guys - your reporting like you work for the New York Times - Kurt - what set list did you hear. I would imagine SMU & RJ were locks - only song 3 was in question, I had my money on Brown Sugar for the reason stated above.

OK - who is BSing.

if they take out or change any of the lyrics i shall be disgusted

it'll just confirm they're a bunch of sell outs rather than an active rock n roll band

Of course they are "an active rock n roll band" - not many others so "active" rock n roll bands...
Anyway, the lyrics thing is really sad, I fully agree.

"During the "you make a dead man cum" line in SMU and the Male rooster reference during Rough Justice Mick simply let the mike fall away from his lips and he mouthed no words at all."
Very pitiful, to be forced to do this in year 2006.

I would accept if Mick decided to take out or change some of the lyrics that people may find offensive because Superbowl is a major family event in the States. There's really no point for Mick to try to sing the explicit parts since the live broadcast will be delayed with a few seconds in order to avoid any "inappropriate" incidents. On the other hand, if the Stones were not permitted to use profanities and four-letter-words at real Stones concerts it would of course be dead wrong, but I don't object to the current restrictions at this particular event.

He should just point the mike to the audience to 'fill in the blanks'.

It's a 50-50 shot at getting a good lead! Let's all say a prayer tonight!

Considering this is the Superbowl......this is not a bad set list!

No YGMR or Miss You!!

===He should just point the mike to the audience to 'fill in the blanks'.===

Not a bad idea.

I got 2 of 3 right as well, thinking it would be "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" included to kiss the Motown ass.

Kind of disappointed to not see Aretha and her "rather robust ass" sing JJF but the stage can only take so much weight.

#......Go ahead....Bite the Big Apple....Don't mind the Maggots.....Uh Huh...#

Damn right Andy. Fingers crossed. Why the hell are they playing there anyway if they can't just sing there songs?
(it's a retorical question BTW)

With 100 (more or less) people filling in the blanks. 0.5% knows the "blanks" I guess
