OT: Queen + Paul Rodgers = Just Sad

I am currently listening to the drummer and guitarist Brian May from Queen plus Paul Rodgers slaughter Queen's greatest hits, and some of Bad Co.s and even Free's as well. I like all three bands, but ugh, most of this is dismal. Crazy Little Thing Called Love is growing on me. Rather like a fungus, but growing. Comments?

A crime. If you like Queen (which I don't really but my girl does) you must hate this travesty. Why did they call it Queen? No Deacon and no mercury. Freddie was as vital to the name Queen as Jagger or Keith are to the Stones. Paul is not one of my fave singers, but I guess he is allright./ But never for the challenging serpentines that Freddie envisioned.

I'm not a Queen fan at all really, but I'm surprised these guys can't give a reasonably faithful replication of the sound...

In many cases it makes sense to go out and get an UNKNOWN front guy rather than a known person. They could have found some singer with good pipes who could do a decent facsimile of Freddy Mercury... enough to at least satisfy the nostalgia fans.

Why is Deacon out?
I used to like Queen very much. A Night at the Opera is still one of my favorite albums.

He simply retired from the musicbusiness. He has also nothing to do with the dvd-releases.

Well, i went to the show in Brum last year. but i was so out of my box, i couldn't really tell if it was good or not.

coupla point though, Its billed as Queen + Paul Rogers (QPS if you will) so it wasn'tpurley a Queen concert. and anyway you slice it Rogers was always one of the greatest vocalist going, with Free, Bad company & solo. I went to see him on the last few solo tours and it was great.

Personally, I'm not too sure about the new live album. i got it just to see if it would jog my absent memory of the show. and it's not too bad -taken as a celebration of Freddie and some good music. But there does appear to be 'something' missing. also Rogers voice seems to be going, as is jaggers, with the passing years.

Of course this thread is going to be open to loads of slagging off, just from all the - If you like any other band other than the Stones then your not a true Stones fan. - refer back to the 'Can't like AC/DC and be a real Stones fan' that was going a few weeks back.

But @#$%& it. It's only rock 'n' roll

I can't understand why they didn't just market themselves as a "new band" and still play this material. It would have gone down better.

I saw the Hollywood Bowl show, it was pretty decent as far as gigs go.

Paul Rogers isn't doing a great job in this band IMO
I watched several shows on DVD and didn't like any. He was reading the words of We Will Rock You on the prompter, can you imagine this ?

George Michael or Robbie Williams would have been much better in this job.

I saw them a few times on there last tour. They put on great shows but paul Rodgers only plays for about an hour or so. He did the same thing on his solo and bad company shows. I don't know why they got a singer who won't do a full show.

Apologies for digging up this ancient thread but I feel like I owe it to Paul Rodgers (who I really never gave the time of day to).
Saw a video of them live and must admit that they blew me away. Not the tired ole Queeners, but Paul Rodgers. Classy acter

I like Paul Rodgers a lot, but he just doesn't seem right for those Queen songs to me.

Freddie = Queen

Queen = Freddie

Paul Who ???.

I admit I have stayed away from this sad turn of events.

Freddie was the ultimate showman to me.

Paul Rodgers pails in comparison.

I will just stick with the originals thanks.

Oh I agree. My girlfriend is a huge Queen fan so I "By proxy" know the albums. Paul R. I know only fro mediocre radio fare. It looked like a total mismatch. But by accident I saw this video, and even though PR means nothing to me, just to be fair I wnated to edit myself from earlier in the thread. Because he rocked well.

I saw Free in 1972. They were the opening act for the Faces. Till this day I have nothing but fond memories of that night. Paul Kossof,Simon Kirke, Paul Rodgers and I think the bassist name was Frasier. Wow, what a show. then the Faces came on. Ronnie Wood, was already a fan, came away in awe. They did 3 encores that night. Saw Bad Co. in 1976. Mick Ralphs on guitar. Another great show.I digress, Queen + Paul Rodgers are playing in Gwinnett (Ga.) in a few weeks. Just can't get excited about that. Just this thread got me to reminiscing.......

Agreed, and what has rekindled my interest in them is the fact that I recently saw a Free/Bad Co tribute band in London. My friend and I were talking to the bassist afterwards, and he was saying that they don't get together very often ....... he just gets a phone call from the others whenever they arrange a gig or two. I was wondering why I'd never heard of them. Anyway, if I recall what the guy was saying correctly, they call themselves "Free Again", and damm good they sounded.

Ahh yes, that was a band that was ...... Free !!
