Let's find a place for Styx on this list.

How about the Jackson 5. Come on - my wife saw them sold out at Rich Sadium (Buffalo). Really - even when you listen to the early stuff - "never underestimate the stupidity of the American people." (anybody know how to spell sheck in this).

Not necessarily bands that suck, more like bands that I think get way more credit than they deserve:

1) Pink Floyd
2) Grateful Dead
3) Peter Gabriel
4) Radiohead (post-OK Computer)
5) The Who (post-Who's Next . . . sorry, Pete)
6) The Clash (when they were good, they were great. The other 75% of the time they were just boring)
7) Queen
8) Sonic Youth
9) Jefferson Airplane
10) Patti Smith

And, for good karma, my 10 most underrated:

1) The Faces / Mercury-era Rod Stewart
2) Stones, post-'81
3) Cheap Trick
4) Redd Kross
5) The Monkees / Mike Nesmith
6) Green Day (pre-American Idiot)
7) Buddy Holly
8) The Misfits (with Danzig, not the pathetic current incarnation)
9) The Easybeats
10) Supergrass

Without a doubt, the honour goes to Led Zeppelin! Pink Floyd being a distant second . . .

why? who exactly is it that 'over rates' them? (and several others on these lists whom the vast majority of people with any taste would agree are tedious and unlistenable)

If artists like Styx, Journey or REO Speedwagon are 'rated' by anyone, it says more about that person than it does about the band

The Grateful Dead... are u stark-raving crazy ???? I read a statistic once... "what band has sold more live tickets than any other..." and I guessed every band except the answer: The Grateful Dead... to rate them #2 you might as well start walkin' the plan right now.

The Who ??? You're off the plank... say hello to the sharks

Most overrated:

Talkin' "mega-groups" only....

Well I never was a Queen fan, so I guess they fit. Styx, Journey, Boston, never got into them, Rush... not that these are bad bands or musicians, just never got into them... Dave matthews band... never was really too crazy about GunsNRoses though they had a few catchy tunes and might have been good live... alot of hair bands: Poison, Ratt... TOO heavy metal I never really understood the angst of Slayer, etc. just toooooooooooo angry. Nobody's that angry all the time unless they're sick... Jeff Beck anything never got it... KINKS sorry I like "well respected man" but that doesn't constitute a career... recently I never really got Jonny Lang OR Kenny Ray Shepard.

Bayou, do you think the success of U2 (who are, I agree, way overrated) is partially due to Bono's activism? Their megastars status somehow coincided with the emphasis Bono has put on his non-musical activities.

I personally don't...

I think U2's success is largely based on their UNIQUE SOUND... a very slick high-production big-screen-anthem sound... partially it's political angst but not that much... it's mostly their music IMO.

Edge is extremely unique guitarist, Bona very charismatic front-guy... the rhythm section is solid and the whole band is very tight...

This "forumula" sounds alot like another band I can think of... The Rolling Stones.

U2 is an AMAZING band and ppl are just jealous of their talent. They've never written a bad song, ever. Period. They're not overrated. They're amazing and they deserve every award they've ever gotten. Props to Bono and the boys for writing good music that actually has a message.

Heart has to be one of the most overrated. A talent-less, novelty group, with a catalogue of bloated songs.

Moody Blues should be on the list, too.

Bayou, remember that The Eagles' Greatest Hits has sold 28 million copies and is the best selling album in U.S. history - proof positive that numbers don't necessarily mean something's good!

The thing about the Dead . . . how can a band with two drummers sound so limp while a band with one small English guy with a jazz fixation and a tiny Gretsch kit swing so goddamn hard? Regarding the ticket sales . . . well, let's just say that college kids like to go on road trips and party.

As for The Who . . . I love it all up through Who's Next (my favorite being Sell Out) but everything after that just seems pretentious and bloated - like simultaneously having delusions of grandeur yet completely losing focus. Quadrophenia is very tight musically but lyrically and conceptually, I just think it's ridiculous and completely up its own ass. And nothing off By Numbers or Who Are You can even touch the earlier stuff, in my opinion.

But that's just me. The sharks await!

Well... IMO the Eagles just rock to the rafters... great band, great songwriters, especially couple great guitarists... (Felder & Walsh)... what a legendary band.

What songs are you TALKIN" about ???

Well, listen "limp" or whatever you want to call them... NO OTHER BAND EVEN SOUNDS CLOSE TO THE DEAD... The Grateful Dead is a more unique sound that any other big piece band you'll ever hear.... Even if you like the drumming or LOVE the drumming or hate the drumming.... I'll let you hate the drumming, they're still one of the 10 greatest banbds that came out of the 20th Century even if I accept that Jerry Garcia and Bob Weire can't play a single chord OR whatever other criticism you want to come up with... maybe Hart&Kreutxmann can't do a bit of percussion PICK ONE, the Dead is still Top Ten of the 20th Century....

while a band with one

That's about where it ends... but at that point youstill have 25 or 30 legendary hands-down perfect stadium rocker songs....

U2, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Who overrated? You guys are nuts. Arguably, four of the greatest bands of all time. Here is my idea of overrated:

1-Styx
2-Kansas
3-KISS

Thank God!

Just kidding . . . we'll have to just agree to disagree! The Dead bores me to tears, and while the Eagles are very technically proficient (and I think Henley has a great voice) . . . they just seem so sterile and polished. It's that '70s Los Angeles coke-rock sound, with all those layers of harmonies and doubled-up solos and stuff. Like Steely Dan. (ducking for cover)

It might not be my cup of tea, but I'm not knocking anybody who digs it. If it gets your rocks off, then more power to you!
