By way of Undercover mailinglist and The Hollywood reporter:

Image slates music docu 'Hail!' for DVD

By Thomas K. Arnold
Image Entertainment has secured DVD rights to seminal music film "Hail!
Hail! Rock 'n' Roll," from Oscar-winning director Taylor Hackford and is preparing two-disc and four-disc editions with never-before-seen footage, documentaries, interviews and other bonus materials.

The 1987 film, which captures the concert commemorating the 60th birthday of Chuck Berry, features such music superstars as Eric Clapton, Etta James, Robert Cray, Linda Ronstadt and the Everly Brothers. The film also incorporates interviews with the late Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Springsteen, Little Richard and Bo Diddley. Also featured is footage of a performance by Berry and his backup band of the 1950s at the long-gone Cosmopolitan Club in East St.
Louis, Ill.

The musical celebration, held in 1986 at the ornate Fox Theater in St.
Louis, was put together by the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards.

Image will release the two editions of the film June 27.

"Of all the filmed musical events of the past few decades, 'Hail! Hail Rock 'n' Roll' stands as one of the most significant, and Taylor's vision for the film brought this event to unparalleled heights," Image senior vp worldwide programming Barry Gordon said.

Hackford, who most recently produced and directed the Oscar-winning biopic "Ray," said he is "thrilled" that "Hail!" will finally be available on DVD. He also is looking forward to present on DVD "literally hours and hours of wonderful, never-seen-before footage that I didn't have time to include in the original feature film."

All told, the four-disc set will contain more than seven hours of new material. Highlights, according to Hackford, include "intimate jam sessions" with Clapton, Cray, James, Richards, Berry and Johnnie Johnson "improvising brilliantly together," extended interviews with some of rock's founding fathers and a conversation between Berry and the Band's Robbie Robertson in which Berry talks about his prison experiences for the first time.

Yes, and at the end of his number, chuck accidentally calls him "john." It's an excruciating moment.

This might be one good side effect of that "Ray" movie, which I never saw. Didn't realize hackford had done "Hail Hail."

Hackford also did some of the Stones early videos or promos.

Nice to see that this made it the IORR news section, because it´s such a good movie, and it promises to be even better with all the extrastuff. I got it on DVD, made from a VHS, and I watch it from time to time, because it´really describing some very important roots of the Stones. No matter how bad a person Chuck might be, his music is such an important factor in the development and history of the Stones.

I thought that Chuck tells Julian to tell John hello for him....he then catches himself and says...No, I'll tell him hello.....since Chuck is so much older than Julian.

We'll have to check it when the dvds come out. I feel like I remember it well b/c it made me so uncomfortable, but I saw it a long time ago... hey, they might edit that part for the release.

you're both right - he calls him "John ... Julian Lennon" and then tells him to tell his pa hello.
Julian indeed looks appalled, as well he might. but why would they edit it out? i mean, since they left it in the first time ...

It's my sense that moviemakers tinker with things when rereleasing them much more than they used to, certainly than would have occurred to them whenever the VHS of Hail, Hail came out. It's now standard to issue movies in 3 different versions, with alternate endings, "director's cuts," etc. To me, it shows a lack of commitment and a bedazzlement by technology (the vast storage on a dvd).

But maybe I should have wondered, why didn't they edit it out the first time?

I love the bit when Keith suggests that Chuck alters the settings on his amp so that the sound recording will be better.

Chuck was not for changing the settings he`d been using for 30 years.....not even for Keith......a great moment.....hopefully the extra footage has lots more gems like that!

Yeah, well that scene with Berry and Keith is maybe the central scene to the whole movie. Everyone's favorite.

It's already on Amazon, including reviews. Probably based on the original movie, since it's not released yet.

I watched the Hail Hail related interviews with Keith today, it's so funny when he says ; "He (chuck) gives me more headache than Mick Jagger, and still I can't dislike him".

This movie was a classic the minute it hit the theaters. The 4 DVD box will be a must have to fans. It was class a project for Keith. The highlights of the film was watching Chuck give Keith shit while they were rehearsing Carol. The looks on Keiths face and Steve Jordan were priceless along with the riffs Keith came up with. The master and his student at work.

I agree, that has to be one of the most priceless pieces of footage of a truly pissed off Keith EVER !! Absolutely hilarious. And the funny thing is, I don't think he actually really ever got that "slur" as Chuck describes it. Poor old Keith, he tried and tried and tried and tried to get it, but it just didn't really ever end up sounding quite as Chuck so evidently wanted it to. I could watch that over and over again and never tire of it.

>> sounding quite as Chuck so evidently wanted it to <<

ie, any way other than how Keith was playing it - Chuck was being a plain pain in the arse, period.
beautiful scene of course - Steve's and Johnnie's expressions as they watch those two are priceless.

>> 120 minutes <<

that must be referring to the original video, not the new releases.

Keith, be well - all the way, baby, all the way

The extra footage should be terrific. I can't wait to buy this one. Nice to hear this is coming out. Wouldn't it be cool to get Gimme Shelter with 1-4 extra hours of film from the 69 tour! Stones fans heaven that would be.

Good news for L.A.-based Stones fans! The Egyptian Theatre is on Hollywood Boulevard, across the street from Musso & Frank's a restaurant where I hear Keith and Johnny Depp sometimes eat when they are in L.A.

EGYPTIAN THEATRE: CHUCK BERRY Saturday, June 24th
At 7:30pm, HAIL, HAIL, ROCK ‘N ROLL, (120”). A discussion follows with director Taylor Hackford + surprise guests.

I just wish they had 1 camera rolling while the others were changing film, there were some awesome blues jams between songs just to kill time.

I was there and as great as the show was...some of that was even better!

I think there's a boot out there somewhere that contains some of those...

at some points you can tell how exhausted everyone was, but a lot of it is mighty fine indeed

Keith, be well - all the way, baby, all the way
