OT southern soul, Sailcat song Motorcycle Mama, Chuck Leavell
Date: January 26, 2006 22:32

this hit from 1972 had Chuck Leavell on it...used to like the song, back in the day...more recently I met the bass player on it, who played in a band here in NC for years. They were all friends with the Allman brothers...Sailcat was some Tuscaloosa, Alabama musicians. Anyone keep up with this music? It relates directly to Stones music, not only because of Chuck, but Wayne Perkins was also from Tuscaloosa...lots of great session players, a big part of the sounds of the 70's...Delaney Bramlett, Eddie Hinton, Dan Penn...great stuff.

Hey Dillard....was Eddie Hinton that white soul singer who sounded like Otis Redding?

Wow, I remember the song but never knew who Sailcat was...I do dig Delaney & Bonnie, & Bobby Keys was in their band from the debut album ('68, on Stax)...D&B also gave us Derek & the Dominos, and Gram Parsons appears on their "Motel Shot" lp. Would be nice to see upgraded CDs of the Atlantic era D&B material, which (except a very early CD of "On Tour" - w/Eric Clapton) is all out of print in the States.

Leonard, yeah EH was a great Otis-sounding white RnB singer and guitar player, on sessions for Capricorn, who he had a record deal with...I saw him once, in a bar, he played and sang his ass off, for about 50 folks.
Hi John, yes I'd like to see upgrades of D&B Atlantic stuff too! Amazing how it all ties up, and the Stones connection...

Wow, you guys are getting deep with the Eddie Hinton references - very impressive.
It's funny, as I was reading these posts, "Things Gotta Get A Little Bit Salty" just came on my computer. Great song.

Hinton wrote a couple of Percy Sledge songs as well as some stuff Womack covered, but never really made it as a solo artist (much like Dan Penn).

not sure if this is true, but Eddie Hinton had a sad demise, drinking himself to death at an early age

Yeah, he died pretty young (50 or so). I know he had some "substance abuse" issues, but I think the actual cause of death was heart attack (which is pretty much a catch-all when they can't really attribute the death to one cause).

Since Eddie Hinton's passing Zane Records has dug deep
into the vaults and continued releasing strong material
from this tortured soul artist and song writer...
