Sorry, Elmo, but what exactly are you saying??? "The danger has really not seemed like it was there since at 1989 tour" isn't English in my book, and if it is, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever!

They are the CPA's and real estate developers who can afford it !!!

CPA's are good for something after all.

Should have read "at least 1989". Sorry.

Proir to 1989, there was a feeling of excitement/danger in the air at a Stones show. You could feel it, almost cut it with a knife (ask Meredith Hunter). Since then, the shows have been more technically perfect (more like the CD), but the sense of danger in the air, as well as on stage is gone.

Several factors -

Very little spontaneous playing on the stage - everything planned except the leads.

Crowd control - No festival seating, but everybody assigned a seat.

No smoking, legal or otherwise.

Crowd getting older.

Just my opinion, but the first time I saw them play "Street Fighting Man", I felt something like a riot could break out at any time.

"There ought to be at least a few shows with like an age-limit policy... nobody over 27... and all edgy music. Would be a riot."

Yeah great idea, except the band would have to be a schoolkid tribute band.

I saw the Stones in 82 in London. The performance was well below par.I've seen every tour since and when they played Wembley arena in 2003 it blew my mind.
In my opion Still Life is their absolute worst live performance.I was born earlier and the Stones have got better and better live.

First of all - Still Life isn't a "live performance" per se. It's a semi-live (with many overdubs) album culled from several tour performances. Having said that, as an album it's a complete dud, imo, because it fails to adequately document what was a fabulous tour (at least the '81 side of it). I saw two '81 shows and both of them BLOW AWAY all of the 30 or so shows I've seen since. Hey - but that's just me (and an army of other smart folks).

I suppose that's what makes us all different. Our opinions. But as long as we all love the Stones music it doesn't realy matter.

Elmo: thanks, now I understand....but I can't say I ever experienced the vibes you refer to, the only danger I've ever experienced is that of hitting someone for transporting 8 beers on a tray past me and spilling the lot into the small of my back...

But this argument that cutting the average age of the concert goers would in fact better the concert experience is total and utter bollocks!!!! I put it down to the "seating" in general and the politically correct "no smoking" policy in some places (gladly absent at the european venues I've been to).

Presumably the seating is not provided because of the poor geriatrics who can't stand for two hours, it is much more likely a consequence of the American litiginous mindset, seats provide a much more effective means of crowd control and provides higher safety with large numbers of spectators, thus avoiding unnecessary crushing, accidents, etc....I'd hate to know what Hunter's family would get paid for as compensation nowadays...
Plus you can sell seated people much more food and drinks and t-shirts, as the seat's still there when they return from their oh-so-rewarding shopping experience . The other point is the marketing, and yes, a lot of the audience is as old or older than the Stones, and therefore some people at that stage in their lives can afford to fork out $450 for a ticket, but they're not gonna fork that amount out for a standing place that seems less "safe", are they ? So I'd put the changes from the "wild concert of yesteryear" to the "muted down concert of today" down to financial gain in general, and not to the age of the concert goer!
Finally, the local culture has got to be an influence. Why do you all think that the shows in Rio and Buenos Aires and Madrid and Barcelona are such a blast??? Because the people there are incredibly outgoing and would spontaneously dance to the sound of static on the radio or dripping water from the hole in the ceiling, its simply in their blood, they can't help it! I don't assume the same from someone who lives in Dusseldorf, although one should never generalise, but you get my point?...

Lastly: What would you do with the band if you were restricting the age to 27? Give them a plastic surgery workover? Or replace them with some other band in their twenties???

I always just hear people complain about what was and how things aren't the same. They are in their sixties - What do you expect? All is I know is I am damn glad they are still touring and not sitting at home or dead. It is an incredible treat for these guys to still be around and touring - would you rather they be broken up thirty years ago?

Being 16, at my 1st Stones show 12-14-81, and having some haggard guy walk up the aisle offering good deals on coke, lsd, and heroin when at the time, 3.2 beer made me sick, was quite an eye opener. Thank god all my cash was spent on my program and jersey, haha!!

I think it was for sport - its called "crowd-surfing" when you get passing along over people's heads toward the front. I sustained a neck injury as a result of it because I was pushed into the front row center at a Green Day show a few years ago and the crowd-surfers were all headed for me and my head kept getting slammed by their feet and their asses!

A mosh pit is more like what they used to call "slam-dancing" took place - the punks still do it now but I don't know what they call it these days. They push each other around in a pit.

I love punk too.

Yes, but do you think they're nearly the same band now that Dickey Betts is gone ? Saw 'em a couple years ago, the storyline was that they "wouldn't play Dickey Betts songs...", tried to like the gig but ....

Not the same band without Betts. Occasionally they will play "Blue Sky" but I don't think they have played "Ramblin Man" since D.B. left. Overall the sound has changed. No more country licks and I really miss the lyrical playing of D.B.

That said Derek has brought a new younger audience to ABB shows and is probably adding to the longevity of the band -- something that is nowhere to be seen with the Stones.

And since this is a Stones board -- the 1/20/06 MSG show far exceeded my expectations!! Great show........bald heads and all......smiling smiley

Long live Hair Implants!!!!!!!!!!!

The Allmans are a better band now than they've been in decades. I love Dickey (can't sing worth a crap anymore, by the way) - but the fresh blood of adding Derek to the band has exponentially improved them.

Maybe you missed my point. I said the Stones just get better and better live. The last show I saw from Live Licks tour was absolutely incredible. Try out the Live Licks DVD. The price should have dropped from £50 by now.

I totally agree! This is the best lineup since Duane/Dickey. They smoke live! The last time I saw them they cooked on Dickey's classic "Elizabeth Reed"!
