hi,

I'm almost leaving to NYC.

Who can advise me some stones related must see's in that Big Apple?

Thanks!

While you're there, you absolutely MUST grab a slice of pizza at Nino's... it's right at the northwest corner of St. Marks and Ave. A...

I've done numerous "Pizza Safari's" in Manhattan and you won't find a better slice anywhere!

And it's a real pleasant place to hang out, all windows sort of overlooking ... Tompkins Square Park... a tranquil oasis in a sea of concrete...

Enjoy.

BOTB, I gotta send up a red flag on Nino's. I went there recently and was appalled. I remembered it fondly too, but I was probably inebriated every time I was there. The smaller place one avenue back on St. Marks -- 1st -- is much better.

Man you're not talking about that place I'm thinkinng of... the small one that you can only stand up in ?? Northwest corner ?? Begins with an S I think...

Stromboli, that's it... I think their sauce is pretty good but the cheese blend is so bland...

If you want a place that will probably remind you of what you USED to like about Nino's, check out Petes-A-Place on 14th Street between A & B... I did a "blind tasting" of some "slice finalists" in the East Village awhile back and Pete's was the #1 winner smiling smiley

Before straying too far from the point of this thread... who wants to stay ANYWHERE around MSG ?? The neighborhood is just so plastic and phony...

Stay in an interesting part of town and just take the subway or taxi up to MSG... I mean anywhere you're near an LIRR stop Anywhere within 75 miles your'e just a few dollars to Penn Station, who in the world wants to have a hotel around there.

Got to agree with BOTB on this one. That area is just crappy and lame. I always tend to stay close to Central Park just cause it feels like home to me, but it'll be too cold to enjoy it now anyway.

So in that case, I would probably pick something closer to Soho.

Also, got to disagree with you on the pizza. I've never been to those two places you talk about, but I don't think I've EVER had good pizza in NYC. I think the great NY pizza everyone talks about is a myth. I find the cheese to artifical tasting, to thick, and the sauce WAY too salty. Best pizza all around for me, is in Rome. But I know some good places in Boston that has much tastier pizza, and cheaper too! I never pay more than $9 bucks for a pizza.

Also, I hate when people call pizza a pie. "lets go out and get a pie". That just bugs me, but I'm from Boston and still call Coke and Pepsi "tonic" so there ya go.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Well, after all I have to get that this is not the right place for serious questions anymore. I'll move over to Shidoobee or some other place to get honest answers to my questions.

That's it, Stromboli. Agreed, it's average overall, but way better than what I had at Nino's last time, which was an embarrassment. Thanks for the tip on Pete's.

Oveinvain [edit: jeez, if you're still here]: I haven't shopped for much vinyl recently. There's an oldies place on Carmine St. in the village, on the left as you come from 7th Ave. It's overpriced but they specialize in oldies, as does Footlight on 12th. My favorite place was Finyl Vinyl on E. 7th, but I'm not sure it's still there. There are a lot of other places in that vicinity, with different tendencies.

Boston pizza??? all massechussetts pizza is bad. it is thin and tastes like cardboard.

I second the Pete's recommendation. I had it last night (!) and it is as good as it ever was.

After I typed my last post, I saw that you're weren't the guy who was asking the original post. I didn't even see your record store question.

There's one that I used to go to, I think it's called Bleeker Bobs or something like that. It's in the West Village. Don't know the address, but if you get there, and keep walking around, there were a bunch of other stores in the area also. It seemed as though a lot of them were switching over to CDs though. Good luck. I used to find some interesting stuff there.

Oh yeah, there was another one that I used to go to, it's mostly CDs though. I don't know the exact address, but if you go to "West 8th Street and 6th Avenue", there's a street with a bunch of clothes stores. There was a small shop that you had to walk up some stairs to get to, and they used to have lots of Stones unreleased stuff.

Stones related must sees eh?
More like a pizza review.

When was the last time Mick took on a pizza, with his physique it was a long long time ago I bet.

Cindy...

While I agree with you that the MAJORITY of NY Pizza is disappointing, there are some tremendous slices to be had...

Lower East Side: Ninos (still love it) and Pete's a Place Rule
East Side in 20's: Try Mikes Pizzeria, delicious
Houston/West Side: Bens on Spring is great, Bens on MacDougal is fair
Murray Hill: Pizza 33 rocks
Mid-Town East Side: Ultimate In Pizza
Upper West: Rigoletto & City Pie are awesome, Sals & Carmines is good enough to get into the "finals"
Upper East: Some good ones there, names escape me...

I've scoured every last slice in New York, I think... you're right that 80% is pretty lame, but the good stuff is worth hunting out...

"Pie" is so New York... they call it pie everywhere in the Apple so I go along with it.

Sal & Carmine's, now you're talking, Bayou.

Bleecker Bob's is extraordinarily overpriced, where other shops are just overpriced. But it's something of a landmark, particularly for punk music, so you may want to check it out. It's actually not on Bleecker, but nearby on 3rd St.

If you're near Bleecker, there's a top-notch brick-oven place called John's. You have to get a whole pie, though, no slices.

S&C's is way salty though... somehow it seems to work...

For a bit of variety on Houston, check out DeMarco's at corner of MacDougall and Houston... a "relative" of legendary DiFara's in Brooklyn... their slice joint fronts right on Houston... like 50cents more than a typical slice but it is a bit more "creative".

More important even than pizza, might be some of the Jazz venues scheduled around the MSG stones gigs:

Vanguard: Jeff "Tain" Watts group playing 17th thru 27th... Tain's played alot with Marsalis bros and is real popular in the apple

Iridium: Lou Donaldson playing Jan 20th (highly recommended), also Mingus Big Band Jan. 17th

Birdland: Duke Ellington Orchestra, Jan. 17th.

enjoy.

Enjoy city and the show.

There was a club called " Woody's in the village" at 82 East 4th St. (at 2nd Ave.) about 20 years ago.
Would you tell me what happend to that place?
