Neil Young's "Far from home" vs "No expectations"

Heard this tune on the radio. It sounds EXACTLY like "No Expectations" with a quicker beat and a horn section. It's on Young's ne "Prairie wind" album.

Everything on Prairie Wind is crap. No Expectations is better. No contest.

Agreed, Nikolai

My point is that Young's song is an obvious ripoff.

Neil Young is a big stones fan I believe. If you listen to "Borrowed Tune" from his awesome 70s LP "Tonights the Night", he sings "I'm singing this borrowed tune, I stole from the rolling stones" to the melody of the Stones "Lady Jane". His early classic "Mr Soul" cops the riff from "Satisfaction". But who cares. Neil is a genius in my opinion. His new album is beautiful. It doesnt rock, but if you like the Harvest type stuff you will love it.

I don't think it sounds the same at all... No Expectations has the most basic chord progression there is. There are like a 1000 songs that go like that. As far as i'm concerned Neil has written far more great songs in the last 25 years than the Stones did. Whether or not you like his voice and style doesn't matter. Neil Young is a genius.

I'll take "No Expectations". In the "Gobbler Neck" category, Neil wins hands down. See performance on SNL.

Prairie Wind is a fine album. not one of his best granted, just like ABB with the Stones

but both are decent enough

the Stones instrumental renditions of Act Together (on Static in the Attic, for example) sound a *lot* like Neil's Only Love Can Break Your Heart (which had already been released at the time). as Keith says, it's all one song anyway ...

"What do you want - what?!"

Just listen to the song, this is what they say is stolen. Altough what is stolen it is all Do Re Mi.
Probaly if you dig in the past you will find an other song that looks like "No Expextations".

When I play the guitar sometimes two totaly different songs use the same notes.

Nico

Did you ever hear the version of "No Expectations" by Johnny Cash ?

It's on the trade section (altough not aloud but what the heck he is Dead)

To letitloose:
Thanks, I've always thought that opening riff on Mr. Soul sounded like Satisfaction, but I never could get anyone else to agree.

Neil Young is great. I've seen him twice many years ago, doing Live Rust. He can coexist with the Stones as some of my favorites.

Listen to the opening song of Afther Math Flight 505 the end of the piano intro you can hear the start of Satisfaction.

And what about the opening tune of Tay Mahal song Everybody's Got To Change Sometime.

And if you got in to Taj Mahel listen to "The Celebrated Walkin Blues" get the vibes of the late 60 Stones.

Nico

If you can find them I will post them on the trade section (don't tell your mother)

Hi Lukester, nice to meet someone like minded. I didnt get to see NY till 93 (I think). He had Booker T and the MG s supporting (in Glasgow, Scotland). They closed with Sitting on the Dock... and All along the watchtower. But the highlight was Helpless....amazing. Will always love Neil Young, the Stones plus Tom Waits , ACDC and a host of others! Take care....

Hey letitloose,
I saw Tom Waits in NY City back in 1978, at the Beacon Theater. What a hoot!! I wish I could've seen that Neil Young show in Glasgow of which you spoke. I saw him do an "unplugged" set on his grand piano in which he did After the Gold Rush ("Well I dreamed I saw the..."). Oh well, I guess this is a Stones chat thing so maybe I should close now.

Luke...ster
