I heard that fan club members got a holiday video message from the stones via e-mail. Anyone seen it/can post it? Thanks,

cc

I got it. I thought it was pretty lame quite frankly. It looked like it was produced on one take. They really didn't know what to say and really came off poorly IMO. I know, I know, I should just be happy they even thought of me during the holidays.

dumb, imo. the "pretense" for caring about their fans is an insult.

plus the 'happy holidays' catch-all title

NO ONE in the UK says 'happy holidays'! LOL

and with a special fan club discount, you get the Happy New Years message from the boys for a mere $100

Happy Holidays

Goes verry well with

Have a Nice Day Now.

Both should be relegated to the sick bag.

Merry Christmas and/or a Happy New Year

We call the holidays by their names! LOL

Happy Hannukah too, i suppose? (just curious.)

Nope...most people wouldnt even have heard of it

We've a much smaller Jewish population than the US would have

interesting ... and gee, maybe an awareness of the larger population has something to do with the way the Stones phrased it?
(i know i know ... but there's another side of the coin too.)

I dont think so, as I would doubt the Stones had anything to do with it. if that was the case they'd be wishing us happy Dwhali etc, which is an ethnic holiday celebrated by more people than Hannukah would be.

The site is run in the US and predominantly geared towards the US. I mean they have even sent e-mails in the past advertising specials to celebrate the 4th of July and wish us Happy Thanksgiving - two holidays that have no significance outside the USA.

They also do St Patricks Day specials. The Stones arent Irish and that day is of no significance to most people who would be rs.com members. It's a special 'event' on rs.com solely because its a big deal in America. Probably even more so than it is in Ireland, in fact.

right, that's exactly what i mean: the Stones are pretty aware that they have a sizeable US fan base, and phrase their holiday stuff accordingly.

yep..which is fair enough to some degree. Although they do have a habit of sending out mailshots to the rest of us for offers which are only available to US subscribers. A bit of 'screening' wouldnt go amiss in such cases!

In the 1989 Atlantic City video, Keith says: Happy Christmas. Is that a common expression in the UK?

Happy Holidays is the most politically correct. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. I mean it's rather obvious why people say happy holidays.

if they dont celebrate it, why wish them a happy holiday. Screw political correctness. In theory, you celebrate the religious festival in question, not the fact that it's a 'holiday'

Gazza honey, dig it: there are other holidays that people celebrate.
sure, i agree, wishing "happy Christmas" to those who celebrate Christmas is cool, as is wishing "happy Hannukah" to those who celebrate Hannukah, and "happy winter holiday of your choice" seems like a reasonable shorthand for that when addressing groups of people whose celebrational habits may be varied.
believe it or not, those "merry Christmas to EVERYone" or "merry Christmas to ALL STONES FANS" messages can get pretty baffling, since anyone over age about six knows damn well that not EVERYONE celebrates Christmas - what, do the rest of us suddenly not count?? but that seems to be a fine point that not everyone grasps, so ... so on with the show, good health to you, before BV closes the thread for being irrelevant, testy, offensive or whatever. :E

My god, who cares if the holiday message is sincere. The CLASSIC Beach Boys' xmas album (recorded June '64) has xmas messages appended to the cd, I've heard scores of rock n roll xmas messages to fans. How about Phil Spector's coda to his immortal xmas album, spoken over the closing 'Silent Night,'is the pretense insulting? I don't like Happy Holidays, but it covers the bases, including New Years. Also from Phil Spector's 1963 liner note to 'Christmas Gift':
"...Now for the first time in recording history, four of the greatest teenage stars in America, all on the same label - the entire roster of Phil Spector Records, The Ronettes, Darlene Love, The Crystals, and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans have come together in a newly produced album, each singing several Christmas songs....Because Christmas is so American it is therefore time to take the great Christmas music and give it the sound of the American music of today..." etc
Phil Spector - Producer"

LOL...you know I'm just being a devil's advocate here, I presume

wish everyone the best at each of their respective celebrations in turn, in fact why not have an "Atheists day" for those who feel they're missing out.

I just find the 'Happy Holidays' schtick a cop-out in general. No one wishes anyone a 'Happy August Bank Holiday', after all
