Greatest quartets in rock
Posted by: Stones89 ()

Aside from our beloved boys (who became a quartet after Bill Wyman quit), who do you think are some of the greatest quartets in rock history?

I'd have to go with Led Zeppelin, Van Halen (both Roth and Hagar eras for me), the Beatles and Kiss. Those are really all I can think of now. I know I'm missing quite a few.

Your thoughts?

1. The Beatles
2. Elvis, Scotty, Bill & DJ
3. The Who
4. The Clash
5. Neil Young & Crazy Horse
6. U2
7. The Velvet Underground
8. Led Zeppelin
9. David Bowie & The Spiders from Mars
10.REM

The Stones have only recorded 3 albums as a quartet and never played a live show as one (ie without 'extras') so its a bit of a stretch to call them one of the greatest quartets of all time.

In addition to the above,

the Derek & The Dominoes LIVE band, which was a quartet (Clapton, Whitlock, Radle, and Gordon), Clapton's very best band IMO.

Traffic was an incredible quartet with Steve Winwood and Dave Mason.

Ditto Jethro Tull, awesome quartet in early years.

Kiss in the late 70's was a big band.

Metallica, and Motley Crue in more recent times.

Do you really consider bands like the "4 Stones" to be a quartet ?

Or LZ or the RHCP who just have 3 intrumentalists and a vocalist ?

Well makes them 4 people... but only 3 on instruments... basically it's a "trio with a singer" i consider that sound ALOT different than a true quartet of 4 instruments.

Beatles
Doors
U2
Queen
CCR
Who
Sex Pistols
Roxy Music
Bad Company
Led Zep
Pink Floyd

KISS- they are awful. I mean, their live CD in 1977 that put them on the map, was also overdubbed in the studio! Does that tell you anything?

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young is a helluva unique "quartet" if you don't mind some backing musicians in the shadows.

Crazy Horse is just a monster of a band too... basically intact since the early 70s they should do a pure NY & CH tour to make up for the last disaster "Greendale Tour".

Hi Midnight Toker,

You say KISS is awful but you list Roxy Music?!? To each his own.

It was KISS Alive in 75 that was overdubbed, which I only found out because of one of those VH1 specials. Regardless, name me one live CD by any band that isn't overdubbed or cleaned up? Certainly none of the Stones live albums. The only one I can think of off hand is If You Want Blood by AC/DC recorded on their Powerage tour 1978. Feedback, etc. all left on.
