springsteen played 115 different tracks

in a 6 month period, during Devil and dust tour. That's an awful lot.
Any statistics on the stones so far.

I think it was 44

(I actually thought Bruce's figure was around 140..I made it 111 after the end of the first American leg and Europe - about 37 shows at that point. I didnt bother counting when he came back to the US again, it was just getting too ridiculous!)

Gazza - I don't have official stats, but for what it's worth I attended the final show in Trenton, NJ where he played 4 tour premieres. (Santa, Mansion on the Hill, Zero and Blind Terry, and Fire). Could you imagine if the Stones played 4 tour premieres in one night??

Gazza is correct. The Boss played 140 different tracks.

And even if Santa Claus or Garth Brooks did 300 songs I would not care. Not my cup of tea.

Re: springsteen played 115 different tracks

Whether he's anyone's cup of tea or not is irrelevant. Like the Stones, he's a major performer at an advanced stage in his career. However, he's taking risks, mixing up his show, and constantly trying new things. He's not catering to the beautiful people/greatest hits only crowd. He pulls from his entire catalog and his audience responds. The Stoned could learn a lesson here.

funny thing...if i saw Bruce, i would want to hear his greatest hits becasue i am not a huge fan and therefore would not know most of the other songs.

So there it is. That's why the Stones play what they do. Sometimes we need to remember that there are a few people out there who are not fanatics about the Stones like we are.

My brothers where very dissapointed because he played so many unknown tracks. It was their last Bruce concert. To bad. Not everybody is happy with a tracklist like this.

The major difference with this Springstreen tour is that it is solo.

Much easier to do whatever he chooses as there aren`t other musicians having to learn these tunes or arrangements.

the only kind thing that strikes me as odd is the relative lack of covers Bruce does - I would think an artist of his caliber he do more acknowleding of those he's indebted to musically.

he used to sprinkle the shows with a liberal selction down the years. Not so many since 1999

how long is the average springsteen show these days? Didn't he perform 4 hr shows back around '84-'85?

And his last big E-Street album, The Rising had at least 6 CLASSIC SONGS on it... "Waitin on a Sunny Day", "Worlds Apart", "You're Missing", "The Rising", "Into the Fire" and the haunting "Paradise"... not to mention other solid tunes like "My City of Ruins", "Further On" and "Lonesome Day"

As a matter of fact, as I look back over the tracklist, it's obvious this album suffers from "Exile on Main Street Disease" or "Californication Disease"... if they'd just trimmed like 4 songs off of it we would be calling it the "Album of the Decade" or something... but it's just amazing for a major musician to still be writing stuff of this quality... who else is ???

It was an "uneven" album, as most of Bruce's albums are, but the gems are truly 24 karat gems. Unlike other bands I can think of that put out albums and maybe have a couple "interesting" songs that fade over time.

If you want an "inventive" musician and songwriter on the caliber of Fogerty or Dylan who can rock any stadium in the world to the rafters, and who plays for 2.5 to 3 hours without a meaningless warm-up band, it's Springsteen.

I've only seen one E-Street stadium show but easily one of the best I ever attended. Fabulous band, even if you don't know any of the songs, don't worry, you'll love it.

One guy with an acoustic guitar and piano does not have to follow a setlist with a corresponding lighting pattern. He can just take the stage and start playing what he wants. The nature of this tour is that its deliberately geared and marketed to a core audience (a type of audience the Stones have never recognized) hence the average attendance of 3-6,000 a night. Not only do the Stones deliberately neglect acknowledging us, they don't need us and probably don't even want us at their concerts.

Keep in mind Bruce's solo tour is pretty cheap to put on... he can make GOOD MONEY from 5,000 people... at least a couple hundred thousand a night prolly...

Like the Cream reunion. They didn't have shit for a stage there... just walked out and played... they made a bundle on those gigs because they didn't cost much. I don't think the Cream tour even had a "screen"... Royal Albert Hall didn't seem to.

To put on a Stones tour with everyone's entourage, etc., they have to play big venues to re-coup the cost.

I have a boot somewhere of just covers. (I Fought the Law, Rave On, Mountain of Love). Pretty good listening. As Gazza mentioned, not so much since the reunion tour of 99. Also, for what it's worth, during the Born in the USA tour of 84-85, Street Fighting Man was a staple. He changed the lyrics slightly to "...sleepy US town."

Bruce did many times Roll Over Beethoven during the last E-Street Band tour, at least in Europe. He also did Who'll stop the rain in Milano, it started to rain so he just turned to the band and started the song :-). He still does pretty long concerts, the last European shows with E-Street Band were about 3hrs 20 mins. He's awesame live!

The longest show Bruce has ever played was 3 hrs 55 mins (Nassau Coliseum, New years Eve 1980 on "The River" tour) (there was an interval back then). On the '84 - 85 tour the shows were from about 170- 220 minutes

Shows with a band usually vary from about 160 - 200 minutes, once in a while creeping up to the 3 and a half hour mark if its a tour closing show or something. Oddly enough as hes got older he's dispensed with the intermission (not used since 1993)

But you know,The Stones at least care for their fans in Eastern Europe. When was the last time Springsteen played any city in Eastern Europe?1993?

The Stones are going to play several Eastern Europe shows next year, including Serbia and Russia where the concert tickets are much cheaper than those in Western countries. So they even lose some money this way.

Seeing The Stones and Springsteen shows are two of my great whishes.
I am finally going to see The Stones next year because they are willing to visit places they have never played been to.

So Bruce,I agree that you are a genius and all but please, come to Serbia,Croatia,Hungary,Russia........

Bruce Springsteen is by far the best live-act for so many years. Acoustic and with the E-Street. The passion and energy from the Boss can't be beat. I've seen Springsteen this year in Ahoy Rotterdam. On his own. Just his music. Fascinating. Over the years I've seen so many concerts of my favourite group. Ten times at the Licks-tour (stadiums, arenas ans theatres). Great memories. But, sorry for that, no one can even come close to Bruce Springsteen live. IMO.

Hasn't Springsteen always changed up his set lists? Since the beginning? I thought he was the guy that actually started all this stuff - different night/ different set.

How can a guy even REMEMBER the lyrics to all these songs ??

Must take alot of Gingko Bilboa

yes he's always changed the show around

wouldnt go as far to say he started all that stuff, though. I would imagine that the Grateful Dead would have done that before him

Teleprompter. When he calls an audible, he not only tells the band (obviously), but a tech who puts up the lyrics of the song not on the setlist. He first started using this (I think) on the 99-00 reunion tour. At first I thought his eyes were closed in passioned concentration, until I realized he was looking down at the screen built into the stage.

Yeah,Michael Stipe had a similar equipment on the stage. He was reading from a small screen
