Altamont - UMT, Stray Cat

These have to be the most intense versions on the tour!
Listening to the MSG versions of both songs and they are reasonably placid, at Altamont they explode! In particular Stray Cat...
Jagger was immense...I guess the occasion lifted him...and the group. At Altamont during Stray Cat even Keith gets into it with his chopping chords...it's amazing stuff.
The Band was certainly on fire...

I believe one can actually see and feel the intensity and foreboding as that tour drove to the Altamont climax and the clearly spent end in Miami.

When I became a Stones fan in the late 70's I really concentrated on reading everything about the 69 tour, listening to every available boot, the Maysles Brothers film, other film clips. It is pretty clear there was something almost otherworldly going on.

I think it comes down to Jagger in particular, really fired up and was engrossed in the whole vibe of the day

Apparently getting punched in the face does that for some people.

Altamont is a sublime concert -they play slow, the sound is raw and fabulous, and they really concentrate. Stray Cat, UMT, Gimme Shelter are best versions of the tour.

UMT was so intense that a man was killed during the song... I find this topic a bit "off topic" (or how shall I express it?)

Like the RnR Circus, the '69 tour and Altamont are gloriously ragged; like seeing a beautiful actress without make-up on; she's still beautiful nonetheless. As for Jagger: I feel that there are moments of almost desperation as he (sometimes in vain) tries to get the focus back on the band. He's dancing for his life, figurately and possibly literally. I once made an edited version of this show that eliminated the extraneous matter and included only the songs played and completed. It's a wonderful listen.

Too bad Altamount as well as other live shows from1967-1975 can’t be released officially in great sound.

True...however the soundboard of the Altamont show(s) exist...only a matter of time before an unofficial release gets out

At 0'36" on the video, there is an early 70s picture with the five Stones displaying golden LPs/

Any idea idea when / where it took place. Thanks

That UMT Altamont footage is still so bloody scary - that lycanthrope in the process of bodily change on the stage right next to Jagger and the short haired gum-chewing Angel, who also looks like the angel of death except harder. And that groove, and the tone of Keith's guitar. Incredible.

Many know this, but you can find the taper of the show in front of the stage. It's been awhile since I spent time on this, but as I recall he is one of the guys that has Andy Warhol-type blond hair. I once synched the recording with the film and you can watch what you are hearing on the tape. He was right in the thick of it.

Haven't been able to find anything about the gold records in the Baltimore video for Under My Thumb.

It's not 1971 because that is on the web.

It really seems like it's for GHS so perhaps at the end of the usual losing money European tour?

The guitar lick is fun to play. The first one is a minor, the second and third major, so there's one fret difference in the second note between the first and the second/third. It's easy to slip and play a major for F#m and not exactly hear it. But if you do it's just noticeable and you'll always notice from then on, especially if it's played fast like the 1981-82 version.

Ha ha... there are plenty of live videos, with footage sometimes, of Keith really destroying the opening in 1981-82. So many flubs! The mistake sets the tone for how Charlie comes in and whether Bill starts early or waits forever. Once Bill comes in they lock in and they're good. It's really goofy.

Because the mix is more clear with LIVE IN TEXAS, STILL LIFE, HAMPTON or WEMBLEY than any previous live albums, the Watts/Wyman dynamic is incredible. Charlie is Charlie but what Bill does, certain notes, holes/spaces, and specific movements really illustrates the push and pull or the tug and lug, the overall heave of their rhythm playing. That era of that style is last heard in She Was Hot and All The Way Down although, like any of their studio recordings, sterile unlike on stage. After that it was different and non-existent in 1986-91.

The Rolling Stones at Altamont is one of my favorite from the 69 tour for sound, I prefer my cassettes and for visuals I can look at some of my paintings
