Did the Rolling Stones ever use drum machines?

My friend Dan, a huge and very knowledgeable Rolling Stones fan, told me the guys used drum machines on some songs. He mentioned the Undercover album.

The title track, Feel On Baby and Too Much Blood. Synth drums on Too Tough.

Undercover album: percussion on Simmons Drums, dub-echo of Dunbar’s electronic drums - [iorr.org] - from the 'Drum Pad' thread - [iorr.org] .

Don't forget Doom & Gloom

Probably Charlie's drum beats were electronically processed (no drum machine).

On the single, there was the 'drum machine radio edit'
Maybe that was just a compliment to Charlie's stamina though?

Link to the single where this is credited and can be listened to?

Edit: probably the 'Jeff Bhasker Mix' was meant (see below).

It wasn't called "drum machine radio edit" but on the single version there was clearly a drum machine sound over Charlies drums. Whether it's technically a drum machine or not doesn't matter for me as the drum sound you hear is not Charlies drum sound. I prefer the Grrr version where you can hear his drums. You can identify it by the different intro.

Thank you for sharing.

Having read previously about the ‘drum machine’, I had wondered which version it was that I had purchased on iTunes, back when it was initially released. It turns out that I’ve only ever heard the ‘Grr version’

The ‘single version’ really does sound rather processed and unnatural; very un stones-like, if you will. I have never heard this version before.

Which version was played on the radio, etc? I wonder, as I’ve never heard this ‘single version’ anywhere, before.

It really is a terrific track, though. For me, more urgent and direct than Angry.

And it uses the single version of Doom and Gloom which is also known as the "Jeff Bhasker Mix". It was played back then on the radio. The vinyl single also only contained this version. The official music video contains this mix too.

In the lyric video it sounds like something synthetic is playing along with Charlie. Could also be some kind of overlaid percussion effect (by software). I wouldn't call this ‘drum machine’.

Sounds like: [www.Qobuz.com] , [Music.Apple.com] , [open.Spotify.com] . Kinda rework with (parallel/overlaid) programmed drums by Emile Haynie. Jeff Bhasker played Moog Bass.

I believe "Might As Well Get Juiced" has Charlie's drums looped.

What is a drum machine? There are some programmed/electronic/sampled drums used.On Undercover... Sampled percussion on Sympathy live since 89, yes. Samples on a several tracks on Bridges, yes. (Might As Well Get juiced, the beginning of Saint of Me, a fill in Anybody Seen...) And so on... Merely used as an effect. The one song I wish they used programmed drums instead of Ronnie playing the drums when Charlie wasn't able, is Sleep Tonight. smiling bouncing smiley
