OT: Their first album is their best
Posted by: rollmops ()

This doesn't mean that what they released after was not good but not as great as their first record. Here are a few records that to me fall in the category:

_ Led Zeppelin : Led Zeppelin
_ Aerosmith : Aerosmith
_ Dexy Midnight Runners : Searching for the soul of young rebels(great title too)
_ Elvis Costello : My aim is true.
_ The Ramones : Ramones.
_ Wilco : A.M.

Do you have the same impression with other artists' first release?

Interesting topic, because I know a number of debut albums that I consider to be "their best", to some degree at least anyway.

Cheap Trick (1977)
Blondie (1976)
Black Sabbath (1970)
Van Halen (1977)
Blue Oyster Cult (1972)

Also, a few underrated first records that are really great in my opinion:

Supertramp (1970)
Judas Priest, Rocka Rolla (1974)

An honourable mention, of course, goes to The Rolling Stones (1964)

Probably a couple more but I cant think of any right now.

Yes, I remember quite well that we are not exactly on the same page as far as music goes.

I don't think of it as the Stones' first album being their best. I didn't hear it until I'd been a Stones fan since '69, and Let It Bleed. I thought the first album was interesting, with a few highlights like King Bee, but it seemed overall kind of thin and not recorded all that great. I love the earliest Stones, but this was not the greatest album.

To me Led Zeppelin's first is their crowning achievement. The Stones might be Sticky Fingers.

Yes, I agree with these two picks; Is This It, in particular. The effect that album had on me is immeasurable. From a purely musical-standpoint, I think Appetite For Destruction was GnR’s best work.

I adore the Beatles and Stones’ respective debut efforts, but they were recorded during the formative years of 60’s music evolution. Both groups could only grow, develop, and get better.

Good call with Snoop’s debut. There was a time - about a decade ago - when I’d listen to that regularly, alongside 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me and Greatest Hits.

Unfinished music by Lennon his best?

Looks like my hip hop picks were already mentioned in this post.
Not agreeing on Dr Dre though: 2001 is better than The Chronic.
