Theres more than 5. About 20, Id say. MSG x 2 Syracuse x2(?) Pontiac x2 Boulder x2 San Diego x2 (?) L.A. San Fransisco 1st Orlando Houston 2nd Hampton 2nd Largo x 3 Chicago x1 or 2 Rockford Seattle 1st ....and a few more
About 20.
I hear St Paul and Atlanta have just been released.
Soundwise, pretty much the same. Performance: Seattle 2nd, Rutherford 1st, Cedar Falls, San Francisco 2nd, both Hartford, Phoenix, Hampton...for a start.
my guess is that there are so many soundboard recordings because the stones were planning to release a live album....still life....so they must have been recording all of the shows to pick the best of the best for that purpose....
don't forget the philly shows....sept. 25th and 26th.....both very fine recordings as well.
The '81 sbds generally sound too trebly to me, plus a lot of buzz and hum from the guitar amps. Maybe it was trying to cut that out of the eq that gave Still Life such a poor sound (going by its reputation - haven't heard it myself).
The 81 soundboards are simply pure PA mixes. No noisegates to eliminate the hums, etc. Its the raw house PA sound. Keith has been quoted to have said "every show on this tour is being recorded in crystal clear sound". I'm willing to believe that what we're hearing is not the pro recording, but rather really clean pure soundboard taps. Pro recordings on that tour were done on multitrack setups and we'd be hearing well mixed recordings in stereo and not the typical mono soundboard stuff.

Yeah, that's why they largely sound like crap, even before the sloppy playing in too-clear quality. I enjoy the few aud recordings from '81 I've heard more than these harsh sbds. Though I still need to hear Hampton, which will have a different sound.
The Stones are saving this stuff until after they break up. Once they can no longer tour they will keep themselves in the spotlight by releasing archival material, live and studio, and making the rounds giving interviews and promoting it.
They were doing a lot of recording on this tour. Besides Still Life & Lets Spend the Night Together they were also recording for The King Biscuit Flower Hour ( the same crowd that gave us Brussels '73)
they record every show on EVERY tour, actually - although I guess theres a significant difference between the sort of soundboards we're getting and the recordings where they're specifically getting the recording truck to do the business *specifically* with regards to a projected official release.
Reason we're getting all these '81 soundboards at the minute appears to be that someone close to the Stones at the time (a roadie I suppose) illicitly acquired/recorded these and is just now circulating a few shows at a time
Supposedly, pretty much the entire tour should be out eventually
