Well I've just listened to In the Jailhouse Now by Jimmie Rodgers ...

But I'm certainly not a millennial...so I've got a reasonable excuse. grinning smiley

Ha! I’m only joshing, of course; we all here, i am sure, enjoy music released long before our time. It’s just that ur friend, Professorwolf, has a seeming phobia of anything non-Stones released after the year 1955! grinning smiley

You know you're getting old when the stuff most folks call nostalgia is just far too modern. confused smiley

Joking aside ...

There's a breed of music lover [quite common on these pages I think] who, right from their youth, always got into music and artistes from the generation or half a generation before the current stuff that everybody else was listening to.

I'm certainly in that number ...and it's a curious, interesting trait.

Edited to add...

Here in the UK , you'll know who you are because you started pre-setting "Radio 2" long before your time grinning smiley

And I agree. My dad was a teenager of the 60’s and kept his records. For several years, I was solely steeped in his collection, with a cut-off point of about 1969! When the Strokes hit it big in 2001, I was 18 and suddenly found what my dad had in the 60’s: my own, current, music-scene to follow. This ended about a decade ago, though. I don’t know anything about ‘today’s scene’! I’d say my cut-off, now, is probably around the time of the first couple of Arctic Monkey’s records, and the first few Killers albums.

1955? no more like around 1980 to the 1920's with a few exceptions mostly for the newer releases of older artists i like

and i wouldn't say i have a phopia of newer music (the last 45 years) as much as i just don't like what i hear and already have a ton of old music to discover

my mom was born in 1957 i grew up listening to what she listened to and got into those bands and musicians then i wanted to listen to what who inspired them and just kept going backwards

and i unashamedly love the inkspots just got several of there 50's decca albums on vinyl and they sound so much better then the crappy noise reduced cds i had before and have been listening to them a lot lately

if it helps my millennial cred i did get into them thru playing the fallout games and roy brown, danny kaye and the andrew sisters too

but i'm listening to this right now

Snap! My mum was born in 1957, too.

It's funny; my mum like Roxy Music and Billy Joel, and considered my dad's tastes - ten-year age-gap - to be 'out-of-date' He loved Elvis, and always preferred the early Beatles and the Stones' 1963-'65 output best. I think I said in an earlier post: it's almost as if music ended for him circa 1969!

for my mom it was stuff like the beatles, stones, ccr, csny, doobie brothers, allman brothers, cream, guess who etc.

for dad (born 59) it was more zepplin, ramones, kiss, black sabbath, def leppard etc.

plenty of overlap when it comes to the music they each like

though neither me or my mom can stand kiss

i would say music for both of them ends sometime in the late 80's early 90's ironically there into newer music then me

Good post, ProfessorWolfthumbs up

Well, your parents are closer in age, of course. My dad, being a child of the 50’s - born in 1948 - loved Elvis; Buddy Holly, etc. The Shadows were probably the first ‘group’ he really tagged on to. For my mum’s - then - contemporary tastes, that was old school; outdated. I guess we have to remember how fast the musical sphere moved then. When my mum was 16, it was Glam-Rock; Slade; T.Rex, etc; a world away from the choreographed dance-steps of the Shadows and the vocal-stuttering’s of Buddy Holly. I’m fortunate: I adore all of it.

i've always tended more towards my mom's tastes then dad's

for her growing up in the 60's it was the beatles, the monkeys, the supremes, and for some reason the rascals (she loves the rascals) all of which her older and more musically sophisticated brother teased her about (called it all bubble gum crap)

he was more into jazz, rnb, 50's rock n roll and doo wop and some local bands from tacoma like the sonics and the ventures

he was important to me musically too (and his great record collection)

i miss him

I miss my dad, too. If it were not for his LP’s and 45’s, i would not be here, today. I still have silly music-related conversations with him in my head!
