Looks like Black and Blue is getting a makeover in 2025. A remaster was mentioned at last nights Welcome to Shepherds Bush premiere.

Hope they'll do a remix and/or add Bonus tracks and a live concert. Wonderful News.

It will be welcome .

But it was a great sounding record to start with...

...so the bar is set quite high for anybody looking to improve it with a remaster.

Well, yes .

IORR is the one "in need of attention" from a sound quality point of view.

I think we discussed it's shortcomings in a thread not so long ago.

A live recording from 1976 would intrigue me; a remix or remaster of Black & Blue, would not. It’s not a great record, and, well, it sounds ‘fine’ as it is. To give it a token compliment: it is, at least, a decent-sounding release.

A remix? But it's the best sounding album the Stones ever recorded.

Exactly. What Stones album sounded better than this?

Black and blue sonically is one of their better recordings. Got to take everything with a grain of salt until announced. Geez I thought Hackney was ready to go when Blue and Lonesome was released.

But we won't loose the original mix. I'd love to hear it in 5.1. For me a remix is a different way of hearing an album, not a replacement. And as I love Black and Blue I really hope for a remix.

Good question. GHS's original mix was removed from the market for good. Unless you'd like to hear brickwalled 2009 remaster, which is still available but only as an overpriced Japanese SHM-CD winking smiley.
B&B sounds good as is. It was recorded well and mastered reasonably. You do not need to remix or remaster it. As a matter of fact the old CBS CD is probably the best sounding digital version.

Black and blue sonically is the band´s best release ever (together with most parts of LYL). When it was released it blew me away, such a great sound. Well, ok, musically it could not be considered a "typical" Stones album back then but looking back now it was an important step in their musical development - and it brought us some really great tunes.
i am afraid though that the digital remastering and mixing process used for most of the latest deluxe editions or vault releases will destroy the great sound.

Please no remixes, once they go down this road we're doomed forever...

Now you're talking. Would love to hear it in 5.1. That one would sound stunning because of the clarity and separation that is already there.

This is the album I've been hoping they would revisit. They don't need to alter anything about the sound of the record but‘Let's Do It Right’ a.k.a ‘Come on Sugar’ would be fantastic to hear in Black and Blue quality, and there must be plenty more lurking on tape. I wasn't aware of ‘Built that Way’ until it turned out upon the Fully Finished Outtakes leak, so who knows what else there is? I read somewhere that around this time they recorded a version of ‘Shame Shame Shame’ which was a hit for Shirley and Co. If it exists I'd love to hear it. If Jeff Beck and Rory Gallagher and other guitarists were lurking around it would be great to hear some studio jams. The original ‘Black and Blue Jam’ would be fun - before it got turned into ‘Slave’ later on. Then there is ‘Sexy Nite’, ‘I Love ladies’ and the ‘Reggae and Roll’ instrumental. They'll probably turn up with new lyrics and embellishments but I don't mind that. Really hope this is true.

Is there a official press release about this? It would be awesome to have a Black and Blue box, unreleased tracks included.

At 15, the cover of Black and Blue was amazing, the dark nighttime clouds of the custom LP label were even more promising. Keith's opening guitar sound on Hot Stuff was so sharp it could cut your head clean off, and Hand of Fate had a cool enough riff and solo (then petered out) . . . and then, ugh. Even as a teen I thought Crazy Mama was fake rock and everything in between would take years for me to warm up to given the various non-rocking genres.

It took me a few more years to figure out exactly what the problem was. Then, I sucked it up and made the best of it.

As for Shame, Shame, Shame it was long reported to be the Shirley & Co. song but more recently it has been reported to be the Jimmy Reed tune.

So listen to the Rotterdam 75 Rehearsals. This SHAME SHAME SHAME (instr.) is the Shirley & Company Version!

I am a bit confused.

Is this Shame Shame Shame people are talking about in the posts above the same track that appeared on the bonus disc of Tattoo You deluxe or different?

If the same, why should it appear again on possible Black And Blue reissue?

OMG if true...B & B is one of their best albums. Controversial certainly, but what isn't about this band?...can only hope this is true that a deluxe version is on the way.

Re: Black and Blue 2025

Thankyou Rambler62, It is good to know that they DID record the Shirley and co song which is a much more uptempo tune than the Jimmy Reed song that appears in a fairly pedestrian run through on the Tattoo You bonus.

I don't hear anything fake in Crazy Mama. Its rocks! I think side two of B&B is one of their strongest sides of music.

Having said that, i can't stand 'Cherry Oh Baby and I like to reunite the the
lost tracks that were held over for 'Tattoo You' so my preferred version is:

Side One
Hot Stuff
Hand of Fate
SLave
Hey Negrita
Crazy Mama

Side Two
Worried about You
Melody
Fool to Cry
Memory Motel

I wish all their albums since had used the same pristine sound.

What’s the best version of this? I’ve heard some of absolute terrible quality, and I can accept a lot when it comes to boots.

Wow great news if it happens! On top of the previously mentioned tracks there's the stuff they listened to at De Doelen, English Rose and Man Eating Woman. And yes there must be other "Built This Way's out there...actually it is on the De Doelen tapes but was mistaken for Becky's Freeway Jam I think ;-)
