As it's not a particularly 'legendary' album, not a right lot, I'd imagine!

However, if this is the date of the 'It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)' single, then that's different. That's a great release.

Right! So, then we shouldn't expect too much! No, there's some fine moments on the album, but it's far from legendary; in my eyes, anyway. I find there to be a somewhat Stones-by-numbers feel to to the overall record.

It's always kind of puzzled me that we criticise the for "Stones by numbers"

Has there ever been a band that successfully covers so many popular music genres as the Stones ?

I love that Angus quote!

Didn't he also respond to a question about what it was like being one of the best guitarists in the world with something like "I'm not even the best guitarist in my own band!"

On 3 November 1974, I purchased It's Only Rock'n Roll, but...
I was really disappointed that the gatefold sleeve jacket was downgraded to a single folded jacket because of the oil crisis.

However, as for contents, the first three songs blew me away completely.
All in all, I'd been playing the album too much on my turntable to damage the needle.
It's Only R & R was pretty racy and titillating for a teenager in junior high like me.

What a memory.
Alla vostra salute! 50th anniversary!

This brilliant poster was given free of charge to all those who bought the album.

For me this album is the low point of the 70s. There are some nice numbers on IT but I rarely listen to the album as a whole.

It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll represented the Stones’ weakest studio-effort since 1967’s, Their Satanic Majesty’s Request. Although it’s predecessor, 1973’s, Goats Head Soup, was somewhat of a disappointment to some, it must be remembered that that L.P. was a follow on from the near-mythical run of four top-notch albums, from 1968’s Beggars Banquet, through to 1972’s double extravaganza, Exile on Main Street. It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll is, unfortunately, the runt of their 70’s efforts: badly produced, subpar song-writing, and a very uninspiring collection of songs, overall. There isn’t anything ‘terrible’ amongst the 10-song track-listing, though nor are there any masterpieces. There are some very good moments: It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It) springs to mind, but there are some exceptionally drab offerings: If You Really Want To Be My Friend, Fingerprint File, etc. They should have omitted the cover-version, Ain’t to Proud to Beg – which is B-side level material at this stage of heir career, surely? – and put the terrific Through The Lonely Nights in it’s place, instead. For me, It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll is the epitome of a three-star album.

I love that record. I know some don't and even Mick and keith have been critical of it. I listen to IORR once in a while from beginning to end and it feels good, still. That is my way of recognizing my liking for a record; does it turn me on, physically, mentally. If it does, I don't go no further trying to understand why, after all those years, there is obviously something to me, no need to intellectualize it too much.

This is an album that I would love Giles Martin to do a remix like he did with GHS with the correct speed Fingerprint File

Yep - plus an appropriate remastering for a non-muffled sound quality. They should let Giles Martin do this as well to avoid a brickwalled mastering.

This is an awesome album. Look at the track list. The weaker side is side 2, but what songs are actually poor? Short and Curlies is a throwaway but Luxury, Fingerprint File, If You Really Want To Be My Friend, even Dance Little Sister (Rip This Joint poor cousin) are still great to hear.

Side one
No. Title Length
1. "If You Can't Rock Me" 3:46
2. "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" 3:30
3. "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)" (inspiration by Ronnie Wood) 5:07
4. "Till the Next Goodbye" 4:37
5. "Time Waits for No One" 6:37
Side two
No. Title Length
6. "Luxury" 5:00
7. "Dance Little Sister" 4:11
8. "If You Really Want to Be My Friend" 6:16
9. "Short and Curlies" 2:43
10. "Fingerprint File" 6:33

It's only Rock'n'Roll albums birthday (but I like it).

Absolutely not. He butchered his version of remastering Sargent Pepper. What are you guys talking about

Better sound quality .... it could also be done by someone else who's capable of it, e.g. Steven Wilson.

In my opinion this would be a good candidate for box set treatment. I'm sure they have a few things in the vault we don't know about. Put it all together in a decked out package and it would be a winner.

Purists will moan. Haters will hate anyway winking smiley

I can only repeat my story. I got IORR as a teenager in the USSR in the mid-70's from an illegal (from communist's point of view) trade. It was on a terrible USSR-made 270m reel-to-reel tape. The recording was done on 9.53 cm/sec (3.75 inch/sec). The other side of the reel had The Who - Who's Next. That was home-made recording of n-th generation (you do not know the number for n). I can not even imagine what was in between the original LP and that tape winking smiley. The sound quality was a bit better than terrible. But for me at that time it was a great album (and still is). I played that tape so often that magnetic particles were falling from the tape base. You can say that some songs are not good, some are fillers etc. OK, let it be that way. But still I listen to IORR from start to finish w/o skipping a single track. And, probably, I play that record more often than GHS, BAB and ER combined.

I agree that the album might sound just a bit less muddy but that is not mandatory. Taking my criminal anti-audiophile starting point (home-made high generation reel-to-reel recording) any CD (even 2009 remaster) will do winking smiley.

It's only Rock'n'Roll albums birthday (but I like it).

IORR is one of my favorite albums. UNDERATED. It's a great album!

I could go through track by track to say what I think is so great about it but it would take hours.

Mick Taylor is HOT on this album. Dance Lil' Sister is my favorite Taylor solo, 2nd favorite is Time Waits for No One, but the reggae/rock mix of Luxury with Taylor, especially the longer version where we get a few more seconds of Taylor's lead. Luxury is one of those great songs buried on the album that wasn't overexposed, every album has one of those songs (Stray Cat Blues, All the Way Down, Too Tight, Monkey Man, etc...)

How about Taylor on bass? So cool!

I could go on and on with Charlie, Keith, Mick & Bill's contributions but I don't have time. I love to sing along to Till the Next Time.

One last thought for now, "If You Really Want to Be My Friend" is a song that gives the Stones a lot of class and refinement. I don't know how to put it in words, but its elegance and grace take the Stones to new heights as if it were classical music (I know not exactly what I want to say but you get the idea). I love If You Really want to be My Friend - sheer elegance and the best Jagger 'Ou Yeah!'The emotions Jagger delivers are among his very best!

If you don't think IORR is a great album, then you haven't played it enough.

The song IORR is a powerhouse telling of Jagger's frustrations. That power chord that starts Ain't Too Proud to Beg.

Why people usually want to compare and rate albums and songs and not just love and appreciate them all, I don't know. It's like the old saying about 'comparing apples to oranges' usually.

Okay, let's start, what song is better Jump On Top of Me or Gimme Shelter? My answer, it doesn't matter. I love them both!

For the people who haven't really given IORR a chance yet... The first time I heard IORR album I thought If You Can't Rock Me, Ain't Too Proud to Beg and Dance Lil' Sister were a load of noise, especially Lil' Sister. The entire band is unbelievably great on that song, especially Jagger. You don't really like this album? Ah man, I'm feeling bad for you right now because you are missing out on a great album.

Why rate or compare songs/albums? I love them all! I'm grateful for every Rolling Stones song, and album and thankful we are still getting more and new Rolling Stones performances.

I was heartbroken when Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones. I love Mick Taylor. He was perfect for the time he was in the band.

Listen to his remix from a few years ago compared to his father’s remix. Not even close. He should have left his father’s work alone. He never should have touched it. There was no reason to take it down a few notches.

At the time EOMS was still a drudge of an album. IORR has some fantastic songs on it - two of which you described as "exceptionally drab" - they're different.

Something that upset Stones fans around the globe and would continue to happen.

Weakest track is Luxury.

I have no issues with the Sgt. Pepper's 50th remix by Giles Martin. Maybe it's not perfect and there're some minor complaints (e.g. LR, LITSWD speed too slow, SLH too fast, GMGM outro now 6s shorter) - but most critics have no issues either - Wikipedia.org. Most fans have also no issue with Giles Martin's 2020 remix of RS' Goats Head Soup album. A complaint would be the brickwalled mastering of the 2020 mix by Emily Lazar.
