Man I just wrote rhese somehwre else:
Richard Lloyd
Richard Thompson
Sonny Sherrock
Dude from, Supergrass
Robbie Robertson
Doug Petibone
Mick Jones
Jeff Buckley
Wayne Kramer
Fred Sonic Smith
Ronnie Wood

I also think that most great songwriters that we normally don't think of a s great guitarrists are in some way virtuosos of those guitars. Like Lennon, Springsteen, Townshend,Stradlin

Django Rheinhardt comes to mind. One does not hear his name mentioned in the polls of the so called greats (Kurt Cobain?) but he could do more with two fingers than most guitarists can with four. Another unsung guitar hero that comes to mind is Richard Thompson. He's phenominal!!!

Do you really think Richard Thompson is underrated? I know he is faa from being a household name but players seem to appreciate his talent.

Well, I never hear of him being mentioned in top ten polls that come up so often these days. Most of the the record buying public have never heard of him either I'd wager but I take your point inopeng. Perhaps unsung might be a better category for our Richard.

Underrated:

Kenny Wayne Shepard= a stud as a teenager and can he rip!

Mark Knopfler

electric-duane, I second that. Never heard a better duo. Duane just died too early. Live At Fillmore East together with Ya Ya's are my alltime favorits!

Robert Johnson. There would never have been a Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Keith Richards or any of those bastards without him. He deserves the nr. 1 on list.

John McLaughlin ''underrated''?!? WHO's the culprit?...

If we stick to rock music, I'd say when Focus's Jan Akkerman used to take off, he did so to a degree that was pretty hilarious!!

And I agree with ChelseaDrugstore re. Pete Townshend as a frontman guitarist. His palette is incredible... Very subtle too!

Heh, the 'right' answer is much nearer...

Namely: outside some Rolling Stones fanatics (like the people here in IORR), nobody knows a genios named MICK TAYLOR. (You never find his name in some list of "100 best guitarists ever", even RONNIE makes the list sometimessmiling smiley)
