I read he uses the heavy gauges 11 - 52, and was suprised that Ronnie uses light ones 09 - 42.

if he uses 10 or 11 earnie balls, i understand why his vibratos are that lame. For those old fingers it would be better to use 9-42 strings dont you think?

You mean G-strings ?

He does use a heavier gauge for open G. There was a thread here or on the Fender forum that showed a custom Ernie Ball packet with 5 strings starting at .011 and ending at .042 if memory serves.

Yes, that´s right,I also read that he use for his open g five string guitar a custom ernie ball pocket o.11,015,018p,030 and 042.
And where did you read that he use for the 6 string 10 - 46 ore 11 - 52?
It is very interesting

It's pretty simple. Standard tuning: 10 - 46, open G 11 - 52. Ernie Balls.

Many people on this board is wondering...how to play Berry tunes i open G and so on.

Do it as Keith does: (I mean the licks on his own songs)

Tune your a-string in to a g. Leave the rest. (If you cant handle the thick e-string with your thumb, throw it away).

Keith plays HTW, Happy, BS - including licks, solos and so on in open G - but was clever enough to let the thin e-string be untouched.

If he had to think about all the changes he would mess up his licks/solos drunk as he likes to be.

No.

He´s a genious. He knew what to do.

Maybe this is a stupid thing to talk about, but listen to Htw, happy and so on. Played in open g, but theres still Berry riffs in the playing.

Funny you should say that Bjorn, as I've done that myself! ~ left the E string as E and tuned the A string down to G, as you said! I think he plays the solo in HTW in open G though as you need the thin E string tuned to D to get the riff right.....

I've solved the problem now as I have a guitar (Variax 600) that I can change the tuning of, in mid song, by turning a dial...wow! technology eh?

Regards,

Ian.

The kind of strings that use Keith Richards are evil, evil strings that care nothing about Keith or his delicate fingers.
