Funny you should say that Bjorn, as I've done that myself! ~ left the E string as E and tuned the A string down to G, as you said! I think he plays the solo in HTW in open G though as you need the thin E string tuned to D to get the riff right.....
I've solved the problem now as I have a guitar (Variax 600) that I can change the tuning of, in mid song, by turning a dial...wow! technology eh?
