IORR Forum performance - Gateway time-out and bad response time

The IORR Forum pages (Tell Me, Hot Stuff, All Sold Out) performance has been extremely bad today, as of 7pm European time, 1pm EST, 10am PST etc. The poor performance is due to hostile crawling Activity, i.e. not fans, but others who try to hack into IORR, or who simply do hundreds of opage requests perminute with machines, not by human interaction. I have not experienced such bad performance in quite a few weeks, but unfortunately, hostile Activity is always around on Internet.

With a reference to the IORR News entry of Jan 1st this year, my plan is to launche the Next Generation of IORR as soon as possible. Included in this plan is a new forum system which is not going slow when there is hostile attacks, also the User Interface and self service solutions should be much better.

It has been impossible for me to work on IORR new solutions during the tour, as I have been on travel and busy working at all times since April 4 until this week. My plan is still to implement Next generation IORR, both performance wise and admin wise. Until the, I ask for two Things:

1. Patience

2. Feel free to comment on Forum performance during the past few months here in this thread

PS. The editorial IORR pages, i.e. IORR home page, editorial pages, all pages outisde the forum pages, are always fast, and never affected by hostile Activity. If you start Your session With the IORR home page, then accesing tour pages and any other non-forum contents will always be very, very fast.

Thanks for explaining. I understand very little of how the internet or even computers work, but you put it in a way I can follow.

Works fine for me (Western Europe).

Is the attack what one calls a DDoS?

The IORR forum issue is NOT related to Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS). With DDoS there are thousands of machines across the world, accessing a domain to take it down, like banks, governments, anyone, it is used by unfriendly hackers and evil countries with paid hacker groups. The master IORR.org domaine is never down, just the forum, a subsite on iorr, is being very slow at times.

Just bear in mind that IORR is two separate systems:

iorr.org : Not affected by the issue (all pages except for "/talk")

iorr/org/talk : Forum pages, data in database, may get slow with many request from crawlers/machines (not real people)

I will find a new and more robust supplier and solution for the forum i.e. talks pages.

IORR is a gift and a selfless one at that. Thank you for it. The occasional downtime is a minor inconvenience and certainly common enough everywhere online.

That's a complicated matter, at least in parts but a 100% nescessary and worthwhile decision!

IORR is such a rich source of content and even more such a wonderful meeting point of fans of this fantastic band - it should be safe against possible dangers and have a loooooooong future lifespan! smiling bouncing smiley

While moving to the new version of the website, I think it would not be the worst idea to rename the Tell Me forum to Tell Me Straight. smiling smiley

I've seen the bad gateway window several times lately. Just thought it was people overloading the site with on tour comments.
