I remember a quote from Clapton and Townsend after they witnessed one of Jimi's first performances in the U.K. and it was to the effect ... "we felt like quitting the business right there"

P.S. I play blues guitar and slide, not a great player by my own admission, but it's fun. Still in shock that some folks think Hendrix and Clapton are OVER-Rated because I too just bought the Cream live double DVD and it makes me think ole Slow Hand is even better than critics have said! Hendrix can never be called anything but stellar, ahead of his time and other-worldly and with a career ended so quickly for STUPID reasons, this wasted life can not be fully evaluated, IMO.

Clapton admitted that after he'd formed Cream, he saw Hendrix and was so over-awed that he got his hair permed. In his words "I figured if I looked like him, maybe I could play like him too.."

The reason Clapton is being considered is becayse of the fact he has done what many have SOLD OUT

Acoustic lame versions

Should not take away his past but it does....

Whya cn;t artists stay true?

I'll only comment on a few that I've seen live.

"Jimmy Page is such a rage - But I could not see the reason why" Or something like that. I feel he is very overrated based on seeing him live. The albums are great.

Clapton is overrated - no fire.

SRV was fantastic. Again based on many personal observation - Amazing. Far superior to Page or Clapton.

Hendrix and Clapton overrated? You guys are nuttier than a fruitcake as you obviously do not play the guitar. If you did, you would never utter such words.
Check out the Cream Reunion concert and tell me that Clapton in overrated. He hasn't lost a thing.

Keith would also disagree with you on this.

Here are the names of a few other underated or less talked about talents:

Robert Cray
Buddy Guy
Andre Segovia
Roy Clark
Brian May
Jeff Healy
Will Seargent(Echo and The Bunnymen)
and............DAVID GILMORE

Part of what makes Buddy Guy so much fun to listen to is his playing oppositie the tempo of the song...fast solos during slow blues, slow held notes during uptempo numbers.

I won't justify my choices to you or anyone else Bayou. As I stated in my post, such choices are subjective. Stevie was a great player, no doubt, but ground breaking and innovative? If you think so, great. I don't.

Well, seems that a lot of people have personal dislikes and won't see the quality of most of the here named guitar players. So I always try to judge their playing which includes feeling, style, creativity and all those things.

Furthermore, which is the rating we refer to? Technically and having a high faulty note rate I might have some candidates but won't mention them here.

Will someone please explain to me how Lennon's name got mentioned in a thread for 'overrated' guitarists?

Uhh...

Let's see... you really are quite the guitar expert...

Listen to "Let it Rain" from Derek and the Dominoes and tell me that's "souless guff"...

What rubbish.

Great guitarists always give each other those type compliments...

That was probably around 1966 or so, by the way... Clapton didn't begin to reach his peak for another 5 years... Jimi was dead by then.

I'm just wondering how you define "groundbreaking"...

Whoever sounded or LOOKED like SRV on stage before or since ?

Even his GUITAR was rather "groundbreaking"... he played a Strat alot with heavier-gauge strings... alot of other guitarists couldn't even play Stevie's main ax, they wouldn't have the hands for it...

You make it sound like he didn't have a special gift, was just kind of a "common talent".

I don't think Jimmy Page is overrated. His solos are great and more importantly he wrote great songs. I always thought Hendrix was a better guitarist than Page, but I like the songs Page wrote better than the ones Hendrix wrote (although Hendrix wrote some great ones as well).

I don't think Clapton is overrated either; he proved in the recent Cream reunion he can still play those great blues and rock parts like he could in the '60s. But the thing about Clapton is he has put out very little good material since Derek and the Dominoes broke up. Instead he has put out a lot of middle of the road crap, which diminishes him in many people's eyes including my own. He can still play great music, it's just that he chooses not to more often than not these days.

I think some people mix up "overrated" with "being too much heard of
(and I havent heard him/her that much, so I feel frustrated)"

Noone can overrate Plant. He cant be overrated.
Clapton seem to be more of a in-the-mood-or-not player though.

Sure, Eric's best stuff is nearly 30 years old, but so's Keith Richards, Johnny Winter, Justin Hayward, Jerry Garcia, Neil YOung, Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend... a long list of people.

Well, Keith sounds pretty good on A Bigger Bang to me, and Neil Young's last album is pretty good too. Good point about the rest, though.

They do sound good, it's just not what I think of when I think of "their best stuff"...

As far as just PLAYING, Keith is playing as good now (or he sure was during Licks) as he ever did... just not writing the quality and quantity of stuff that he did in the 60's and 70's, IMO

Hey, Expert. Let It Rain is not on Derek & The Dominoes.

Let's remember something here Bayou, it's MY OPINION NOT YOURS!! I like what I like and I happen to think that he's slightly overrated. I DIDN'T say that he wasn't good. Got it? I hope so.

I understand it's your opinion, and I do respect that...

As you know, when you put your opinion "out there" you do so at the risk of a fair amount of "ridicule"...

Just for the record, you didn't say he was "slightly overrated" you said he was the "most overrated"... check your writing above.
