You've obviously never listened to Cream, Blind Faith, OR most certainly never listened to Derek and the Dominoes "Layla" or Derek and the Dominoes Live... Just to mention about 6 or 7 Clapton albums I can refer you to that are all guitar genius.

Refer to previous message...

If you dare accept the challenge, go out and buy "Derek and the Dominoes Live" and tell me that is "overrated" guitar work.

Yeah, Keiths very overrated...

That's why there's no guitarist on earth who's MORE INVOLVED with the CORE RHYTHMS of his band than Keith Richards...

If you think he's overrated, you sure didn't attend any Forty Licks gigs.

Most Overrated Guitarist...

If I can only pick one, sorry, I gotta nominate Jeff Beck...

Most under-appreciated: Elliot Easton.

And the guy who never seems to get "elevated" high enough... I know alot of people "appreciate" him but he's a genius you just don't hear mentioned often enough: Jerry Garcia.

The Leppard guys are overrated the whole bunch;
maybe except that one-legged drummer.

Most UNDERrated hard rock band btw: Motörhead.

Reptile- Thank you! You make a good case for SV.

SRV overrated? Please! Ask any GOOD guitar player if SRV is overrated, they will tell you NO. He was a genius!

As far as underrated or unrecognized, let me add Don Felder (Eagles).

While the technical side isn't everyting, it cannot be ignored. Eddie Van Halen is one of the best technical guitarists ever. A person may not like his style, but he is not overrated. Furthermore, he is also not just a "speed player." Moving on....

The most overrated guitarist ever...Santana!!

Wow, if you add up the names so far, that's one big list! Guitarists that always make the best of lists of any music/guitar mag.

Hendrix, Van Halen, Clapton, Beck, Page, Vaughn, Blackmore, Vai, Richards, Taylor, etc.! Guess it shows how diverse people's opinions are.

Out of curiousity, how many people on this board actually play guitar?

I believe there was a thread on that not too long ago. I play guitar.

Peter Tork...

Peter Tork played guitar in the Monkeys? I thought only Michael Nesmith did! Hey,you learn something new everyday.

Who do I think is the over rated guitarist? As I'm so found of pointing out when these sort of posts come up, it's a relative thing and very subjective, but my vote would go to Carlos Santana followed by Stevie Ray Vaughn. I'm not saying that are bad, they are a great, but their musical contributions are not ground breaking or inovative.

Mick Taylor, Clapton, Lennon. Steve Vai, Satriani...who listens to them ? So Vai can play a bizzard of notes or Mozart? Satriani....of course he very talented he don't make people move, IMO.

For this board though, without a doubt, Mick Taylor is way overrated.

If he never played for the Stones he would have been a session man, hired gun.

Peter Tork was brilliant.

Lennon overrated? Don't you have to be rated before you can be overrated?

That's ironic, I don't think I've ever seen Mick Taylor's name mentioned in the guitar magazine polls. In fact, usually after a poll comes out, people on this board start to complain about him being left off of the list.

Keith Richards is not a bad guitarist. Have you ever heard him in a good blues jam? He's awesome. It amazes me that he doesn't use his skills more.

Jimi rules and its boring but true. He is simply the greatest noone has made that impact or played like him. Soul man. His soul was something else. Eric Clapton was great in the 70s but clearly overrated in the 80s and 90s when he was "the greatest" of that time. No way. Jimmpy Page is overrated.

Ronnie is overrated but not on this forum. Lennon is underrated. He had soul and style man. Totally unique. Underrated: Macca during the Beatles-era. George is underrated too (Abbey Road, White album) and overrated (All things must pass)

Oh yes I totally agree re Clapton. Most overrated ever. Plus an incredibly boring songwriter. So tired of him saying about every decent band that comes along that they chanhed his life.
Hendrix is never overrated, as is SRV never overreated.
Most UNDERrated IMO are : Richard LLoyd, Richard Thompson, Robbie Robertson, the guy from Supergrass, Doug Petibone (Lucinda Williams) and yes Mick Taylor.
Nashville is peppered with the hottest guitarrists we have never heard of.

I can't belive so many rank Eric Clapton as the most overrated guitarist! He is a fantstic guitarplayer, just listen to the old cream stuff on songs like Crossroads, White Room, Srange Brew, Sunshine of Your Love, Badge etc. That it is what I call great guitarwork.

Have you watched Cream live at the alpert hall, Clapton is far from overated folks.

Clapton overrated? Are you smoking crack? He can do it all.

RE' Elliot Easton as underrated- If he as so friggin' hot, was is he playing John Fogerty tunes to pay his rent?

Jerry got a bad rap from a lot of folks b/c of the Heads, but the man could play like nobody's business. Not too mention he toured every year of his life until the day he died.

It's hard to say that Kurt Cobain was an overated guitar player. He was always known for his songwriting, not playing. Regardless, he gets props for nearly single-handedly putting an end to the 80's Hair Band trauma. Talk about overated guitar players. Just look at that whole genre. How about Slash?

As good as Eric's work with Cream was, I think it was just a prelude to his work with Derek and the Dominoes...

Especially on Derek and the Dominoes LIVE ALBUM, which is unexplainedly an "obscure" double album.... that's the very best work Eric ever did, IMO, eclipsing even Cream...

And how anyone can say Clapton's overrated... he's so UNIQUE, has his own sound, that beautiful unmistakable guitar...

Like Mick Taylor... you put on Bob Dylan "Real Live" for 2 minutes and you're asking yourself... "who's that guitarist" ??

Since you don't think Stevie Ray "broke any ground" I'd sure like to know the long list of guitarists that you think sounded like him either before or after his time, or had his unique stage presence... I can't think of anyone.

Clapton with the Stones?..utter mismatch. All one has to do is listen to his over-the-top solo on Little Red Rooster on Flashpoint...totally out of step with the song....
