He was the subject of my favorite line in "Animal House."

Pinto says "I know, Mr. Jennings is a wonderful teacher."

It's probably the only line in the entire without any comedic value.

A great actor. As noted, the remake of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is well worth checking out, along with Don't Look Now and Klute. RIP, sir.

I remember seeing Animal House in the theatre when it first came out. I hardly recognized any of the actors except Donald and John Belushi

In the 25 year DVD addition they talk about how they reached out to many of the more famous actors at the time and Donald was one of the only ones who agreed.

It also stated how many of the requested actors saw the script and said it was crazy and would never work.

Look what came afterwards............Vacation, The Jerk, Airplane, Porky's, Police Academy and many others.

He will be missed. I still watch Kelly's Heros when it is on.

Ordinary People is, in my opinion, a great movie.

That twinkle in his eye, even when he’s playing a bad guy.

Just a couple hours before the news of his passing over to the better place i sent my Mum some highlights on youtube with clips of Oddball from Kelly's Heroes, so funny, havent watched that film in decades. Wow what an amazing actor, they don't make films like that today, missing him already.
I dont think he's ever been in a film where his charactor didnt leave a lasting impression on me.

Both of Donald Sutherland's roles in "Kelly's Heroes" and "The Dirty Dozen" are similar as unconventional characters providing non-slapstick laughter in stressful military settings. While some military films dabbled in comedy before, none placed it in the midst of high-stakes combat operations.

This was a significant shift in cinematic direction, allowing writers, directors, and actors to insert anti-establishment, comedic interactions into other military films like "M*A*S*H," and to critique war bureaucracy in "Catch-22." This trend extended to non-war films like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," continuing the development and exposure of more complex character roles, as also then seen in "Taxi Driver."

In retrospect, Sutherland should have received a Best Actor nomination for playing Hawkeye Pierce, a solid leading role. However, he was competing with George C. Scott in "Patton" (the winner), Jack Nicholson in "Five Easy Pieces," Ryan O'Neal in "Love Story," and James Earl Jones in "The Great White Hope." Even though he was overlooked, Sutherland set the foundation for Alan Alda to become a six-time Emmy award winner.

In Animal House, he’s the Teacher who gets the frat boys stoned, leading Pinto to ask, "Can I buy some pot from you?" Then he sleeps with Boon's girlfriend, perfectly portraying a predatory teacher taking advantage of the youth they're supposed to help—a more common issue than realized and another example of his great character performance ability.

(I find Kelly's Heroes to be ridiculous, btw. As far as I know, there were no long-haired, bearded hippies in the U.S. military in the 1940s, or anywhere else for that matter)

Fully agree about Klute...

...but the history of cinema would be far poorer without the odd dose of "ridiculous".
