For your information, Townshend really was conducting research like he said. He was trying to organise a campaign to convince credit card companies like Visa and Mastercard to stop acting as financial brokers for internet child porn sites. Thanks to the publicity his case generated in 2003, both companies agreed to do this.
What prompted Townshend research into bthe area was that in 1999, his then ten year old son was surfing the net looking for sites for his age group. He typed the word "teen" into Google and guess what he pulled up? Yes, that's right - images of children being sexually abused. He told his father about this.
Prior to paying $4.99 to the Landslide child porn site, Townshend contacted both Scotland Yard and an internet watch agency specialising in figtinbg child porn. He told them what he was doing and why. He also explained that he would pass on all information he gathered to them.
After Townshend was arrested, the internet watch agency produced the e mail he had written them at the time and said that they were satisfied that he had been telling the truth about doing research.
Townshend made no secret of the act that he was researching child porn on the internet. Between 2001-2002 he wrote a series of articles on the matter and posted them on his website. Anyone reading these artices would have been in no doubt that he had seen these horrific sites.
When the police searched all seven of Townshend's computers they didn't find a single image relating to child porn. He wasn't charged with downloading it, but merely cautioned because he had broken the law. Or had he? Townshend visited the site in 1999. It didn't become illegal to pay to visit such sites in the UK until 2000. Had it been illegal then, I doubt he would have visited the site.
In short, Townshend was guilty of naivety and recklessness and poor judgement. He is not a paedophile.
Secondly, don't forget that Bill Wyman had a relationship with the 13 year old Mandy Smith. He claims he didn't sleep with her.
