Sympathy For The Devil was outstanding in Chicago, possibly better than any version from Keith for 20 years.
Keith will do this sort of incredible out of the blue kick ass playing and it makes you wonder just how much more is under the surface waiting to get out, but alas the tours end after 14 to 20 shows and the guitars go back in their cases for another year or two.

How can Keith get SFTD that right, wow, beggars the question what was he playing at all those times it hurt my ears to listen.

SFTD.

I have weighed in on this topic before. And yes, I understand that these are 80 year old guys and we give the boys some slack for their current performances, and we are happy that they are still performing. But as a guitarist myself, I maintain that Keith has not produced a tasty, focused and coherent guitar solo that rips on Sympathy for the Devil since the Steel Wheels tour.

Probably not, but the masters make their own rules. Kids, don't try that at home. We lesser mortals are bound by traditional conventions, you know, what our guitar professors teach us. But to judge Keith - who is a total anomaly to all that - with those is a serious category mistake.

Chicago 2024 Keith SFTD is not much different than Miami 1994 Keith (other than when Keith returns to the main stage):

That's live. 1994 Keith a bit faster than 2024 Keith but it's the same basic three note strangle lick.

VOODOO UNCUT!? Ha ha... not exactly. More like NIPPED AND POORLY TUCKED EDITING

Keith may keep it simple now on Sympathy, but what he plays sounds really good. I used it to get anxiety attacks listening to modern Sympathy’s.

IMO the best post-Steel Wheels version is Glastonbury.

I have no academical explanation why Keiths sounds that good as he sounds. For Mick Taylor I could bring up a few. What both players have in common to me is that I like them better when I'm drunk. As for the Stones fans and audience in general it is also the Bandwagon effect that plays a big role.

My theory is that it’s a combo of relative sobriety and maybe practicing more. I think Keith also has adapted well to his limitations and can accurately work on reformatting his timing to fit the current sound.

His playing has been a roller coaster since 2016 but we’re definitely on the uphill slope now.

I dont get it. Sympathy is a song where every chorus should go with a bang! Big one! But no. But apart from that: great shows lads!

I think Keith peaked in 1990, this is Sympathy For The Devil on steroids.
He did a similar solo in 89' in Atlantic City. This clip in 1990 Tokyo.

Couldn't resist this one from 89' Atlantic City.
Keith's a force of nature at his best here.

I agree with your assessment that Keith indeed did peak in 1989-90 as these videos demonstrate. On many of the Steel Wheels shows I've listened to, Keith sounded pretty sharp and consistent from night to night.
