19 slots, hundreds of good songs. It is clear that not everything can stay all the time ....

so this thread is about when songs were last performed? I don't get it...

Midnight Rambler was performed for 10 years at every single stadium/arena show. Nothing wrong with replacing it now. I personally think it has something to do with Mick getting older and this song was for him the song to show off his dancing moves. Maybe he simply doesn't want to do it anymore?

None of these songs, mentioned, have been 'cancelled', so to speak. There's perhaps some self-censoring from the Stones corporation, regarding Brown Sugar. Midnight Rambler needed a break, probably.

I'd rather have tumbling die & miss you retired permanently than midnight rambler

It's time to give it a rest. It's my toilet break song. At least Miss You starts and finishes - MR just draaaaaaaaaaaags live. I love the original though.

It was rehearsed in Los Angeles, so it isn’t necessarily dead.

Put me squarely in the Midnight Rambler is my favorite song of the night camp - the one that sends me to that ‘Other place’ only the Stones can take me to.
REALLY hoping they bring it back for Foxboro - ‘well you heard about the Boston…’

Stevie buried it.

His drumming was awful.

Songs never die! Wrong title...playing it or not playing it live is just a choice of setlist.
Is it possible that every time we have to find motivation behind every choice? Otherwise we can say that the aliens don't like it, so the bad Mick who also wants aliens in the audience has decided to remove it.>grinning smiley<

I'm with you. My shows are in NJ and Philadelphia. It's a masterpiece and I will miss hearing it terribly. I could definitely do without Miss You but we all have our own taste I guess.

I loved the interaction between Steve and Darryl in 2022.

For this tour it seems that MR will not be played, so, if the question is about considering this tour as the last one, well, it's more than 20 years that they're touring for the last time.
The way Mick and Ronnie look, they have energy for many coming tours. Keith is Keith, so no matter on how he looks.
It will be played in the "geriatrics" tour or the "wheelchairs" tour to come in 20 years. Or any other tour in the meantime.

Health of the band notwithstanding, I can foresee another tour in a year or two to support the anticipated follow-up album to Hackney Diamonds. Perhaps MR will be revisited during that time, if not sooner.

It is also interesting to see how quickly Out Of Time seems to have been dropped from the setlist after picking up steam, but it's also understandable given the band is replacing some of those songs with the new HD tracks.

One song I don't foresee returning to the live set is Ghost Town, with its message of the pandemic maybe seeming outdated or antiquated now. Too bad though, as I enjoyed seeing it regularly in the setlist of the previous tour.

Ride like the wind at double speed.....

oh please

they last played umt in 2021 not 1981 and i'll be surprised if it dosen't at least come up in the song vote at some point this tour

stupid girl has never exactly been a staple of there sets

why not ask why they never play had it with you, summer romance, so young, c-cksucker blues, some girls etc etc etc

the reason for not playing midnight rambler is not related to some made up controversy or concern about the lyrics being offensive or not

it's probably related to them wanting to keep the shows under or around 2 hrs and have the lengthy ssoh in it and a couple other new songs without dropping the crowd pleasing warhorses (which sadly the often 15 minute long mr isn't one of)

and mick's obsession with getting a large response and a lot of energy from the audience plays a huge part in it too i would assume

seriously that interview he did before glendale where he's talking about dropping out of time because it didn't illicit a large enough reaction from the american audience says it all

and he's probably more concerned about the crowd response now then he normally is with all the new tracks in the set that the casual fan audience dosen't know

i'm convinced that the only thing mick jagger truly fears is playing a show to an audience that's completly unenergized and ambivalent to the songs he's performing

that all being said i'm definitely on the pro midnight rambler side of this debate

to me it's the highlight of there post 2012 shows and is always good even when it's bad and the only song they really have to have in the set along with jjf

but i agree with others that it drags on way to long

there's no reason they can't keep it under ten minutes

and for that matter ycagwyw, sftd, miss you and satisfaction are all way to long and drawn out too

i'm sure this is an unpopular opinion but i would gladly trade ssoh for for midnight rambler and also think that it would make a better first encore song too

if they really want to play ssoh why not drop ycagwyw or better yet create some kind of medley of a fusion of ycagwyw and ssoh

that way everyone wins the hardcore fans get a new song and seriously changed up version of ycagwyw, the casual fans get a warhorse they reconize, and mick and the band don't have to worry about the audience losing interest in a new song

Professor Wolf I agree on everything except the only song they must play EVERY gig is of course Tumbling Dice.

JJF is expendable as is Satisfaction or Sympathy, BUT, no Dice? No Show!!!

I am personally outraged that they have never introduced Gomper into the set. It would be a great rarity, a sure fire singalong and the crowd would love it, but Mick/Chuck/the head of security continually insist on not playing it. Clearly they have been gotten at by the woke brigade, or the deep state, or the FBI, or aliens, or something.

Without Charlie MR has never been the same again for me. Same goes for Start Me Up and Paint it Black. I think the versions with Steve got stronger over time especially late 22 (Paris, Stockholm).

The disappearance of IORR, Brown Sugar and Midnight Rambler who have been played at every major show from 2012-2018 gives the setlist room for rotations and I like that a lot.

Gimme Yaya's en Brussels'73. Don't need the rest. Of course the Studio version on LIB is sinister enough.

The problem is, despite the omission of these titles, they don’t rotate songs, or introduce new repertoire, that much.eye rolling smiley

Cross your fingers Steff, if they're gonna pull it out it will be on this east coast run.

I miss Midnight Rambler, but they needed to make room for some Hackney songs without dropping any of the things they "must play" (some of which I would happily do without instead). I think it's length rather than lyrics that has taken MR off the setlist: there might also be a feeling that it doesn't work so well without Charlie. The only other candidate of similar length is Miss You, and that is never going to be dropped.
