English language only on IORR please
Posted by: bv ()
Date: January 4, 2024 13:20

Please post in English language only on IORR. Any other languages posted in a thread may be deleted, and time will be wasted.

There are Google Translate, many other tools to use for translations. It would be a big mess if everyone, selfishly, used their own native language on IORR. Also, it would take a lot more time for moderation.

Feel free to write "colo" or "colour" or "gaz" or "petrol" and so on, i.e. US or UK English.

I think we native English speakers around here are very privileged...

...and we're all greatly in awe of the wonderful command of our language demonstrated by the folks in other lands.

Scots? Well, it's unintelligible to anyone not from Scotland. A bit like Welsh winking smiley At least our glorious language is understood globally. In fact, it is the language of the world; courtesy of Germanic tribes! The Angles, The Saxons!

Your wit, your speech, your repartee impressed me almost instantly!

That said, we should compromise and go Canadian English. No one wins with this to be clear but the beaver as our new emblem shows we're busy and mean business!

Thank you, treaclefingers! I did reside in Canada at one time, actually. I did find it baffling how they ‘sort-of’ combine the two! Funny old speech, there. Loved it, though.

Yup, Canada is a mixture of both! Also, even though the country has been metric for decades, grocery stores still show things like produce as 99 cents per pound and more often than not, when someone is missing, they'll describe them as 5 ft. 9 and weighing 175 lbs as opposed to 175cm and and 80kgs.

I think this is a reasonable request and in due course I intend to comply after my solicitor reviews and approves of the terms and conditions. Is there an opt out? Can we be grandfathered in?

Is it "exit" or "way out"?

I'll see myself out.

"Exit on men's street" is a Rolling Stones album, "way out" an ABB song.

Each post, either in english or french could automatically be translated into the other language. Each post is then completely bilingual.

That would please the Quebec language police!

I have forgoten the number of french rooted words is modern english but that is quite a lot.

That’d be because of the Norman Conquest of 1066. Over time, their language intwined with the early English that was spoken by the Saxons.
