OT: 2024 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship
Posted by: Topi ()
Date: December 27, 2023 08:55

So...the tourney got started yesterday. Canada beat the Finns, no surprise there I guess. Couple of great glove saves from both goalies!

Anybody going to the games? I am traveling Tuesday next week, got tickets to two QF's, the semis, the medal round and the relegation round.

Never been to Gothenburg actually - I had a ticket to the 2006 Stones show at Ullevi, which never materialized for reasons we all know.

I'll be bringing four jerseys:

- a white Canada Cup 1987 Team Canada jersey
- a red Turin 2002 Team Canada jersey
- a white Sochi 2014 Team Canada jersey

and the cherry on top: a red Letterkenny Irish jersey with #69 Shoresy! winking smiley

It will be Canada winning all the way again.

I will be in Prague in May.

I saw the Rolling Stones in Gothenburg in 1990 (Eriksberg) and 1998 (Nya Ullevi). A nice town. I think Team USA will win this year. I see Sweden and, of course, Canada as runner ups.
Maybe Finland too - but they started with two losses. Sweden will meet Germany tonight and Canada tomorrow. It will be interesting to watch.

Oh, it's USA or SWE for the gold for sure. Team Canada never wins when I go.

Tell me this isn't the best time of the year, though.

Not as easy to follow games in Canada with the time difference! Cheering for Canada but hoping the US does well since 4 Blackhawks draft picks are playing for them! Connor Bedard is exceeding expectations, scoring highlight reel goals last night and last Saturday!

Too bad the Hawks didn't loan Bedard to Hockey Canada.

I thought that originally, but at this point, he's already won it twice and he's playing awesome in the NHL now. It would be a step backwards for him to go back to play in a junior tournament.
Macklin Celebrini is looking great in the tournament so far for Canada, and is projected to go first overall in the 2024 NHL draft. I'm hoping that the Blackhawks continue to do poorly this year and might get the first overall pick again! He already plays in Chicago for the Chicago Steel of the USHL so he wouldn't even have to move!

Interesting games coming up tomorrow - Germany-Latvia and Norway-Switzerland - which will decide which teams who make it to the quarterfinals on January 2nd, 2024.
Some good games today - especially the Team USA against Czechia game (4-3 on penalties) one.

Great tournament so far. I'm thinking this will be Sweden's year to win it all. Their defence has yet to suuender a goal and the team looks solid.

Just out of curiosity.....when the time comes that Russia and Belarus are reinstated into these tournaments, will they be automatically placed within the top tier divisions, or will they need to start from the bottom and work their way up the ladder?

I don't know, sf37. I don't think it will happen for a while though. René Fasel was corrupted but he was kicked out and replaced by Luc Tardif (French Canadian). Hopefully he's not corrupted yet...

They were only suspended, with the view they would be reinstated in the top division, unfortunately

Bit off topic, but Canada sure choked today in the Spengler Cup semi final in Davos. Up 3-2 with about 4 minutes left, let in 3 late goals to lose! TSN here in Canada shows both World Juniors and Spengler Cup over the holidays.
I don't usually watch the Spengler unless Canada is in the finals but tuned into the third period of this game. Didn't recognize any of the players but coach Bruce Boudreau coached the Vancouver Canucks last year.
The team that beat them, Dynamo Pardubice is from the Czech Republic. They play Davos in the finals tomorrow. Heard they've never won before so I'll cheer for them.

So Latvia beats Germany and keeps their quarter finals hopes alive. But if either Finland or Germany get just one point in their last games tonight, Latvia is out.

Switzerland beats Norway and advances, while Norway is going to the relegation round.

Lots of hockey right around New Years with the last round robin games at the U20 followed by the Winter Classic in Seattle tomorrow!

Currently hate-watching the Finns crap the bed against Sweden.

All kinds of time still, of course.

And they tied it with the goalie pulled!

This is the WJC at its finest.

Shootout win for the Finns, and they finn-ish with 5 pts in the group. This means Germany has to beat Canada to make it to the quarters

Meanwhile at Frölundaborg, USA just destroyed the Slovaks 10-2.

CZR and SUI are playing for 3rd place of their group. The winner of that game will face Canada, while the loser is slated to play against Sweden.

Canada and Germany tied 2-2 early on in the second.

Can someone please clarify why Germany needs a point in today's game against Canada in order to avoid the relegation game against Norway? Even without a point today, Germany's GF/GA is most likely to be superior to Latvia's (even though both Germany and Latvia would be tied with 3 points each, based on a win apiece).

Is it because that Latvia defeated Germany head-to-head that Latvia gets the nod over Germany in qualifying for the final 8? Thank you....and Happy New Year, all!

Yes, the first tiebreaker is the game they played against each other.

Game misconduct, and most probably a suspension, for Conor Geekie after 6 seconds into the game against Germany. Checking to the head. Celebrini in Canada is a really good player.
Germany and Norway in the relegation game. Germany the better team of the two - but you never know. Quarterfinals are now decided and will be played on January 2:

Sweden - Switzerland
Slovakia - Finland
USA - Latvia
Canada - Czechia

My guess: USA - Canada in one semifinal and Sweden - Finland in the other one. The most even QF is probably the one between Finland and Slovakia. Czechia may put Canada to the test also.

Isn't there reseeding though? So Canada cannot meet USA in the semis.

It's not a bracket.
