The last show I went to was The Hollies at the London Palladium. There are still two original members of the band, Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott, and their record breaking claim to fame is........they have toured EVERY year since 1962!

rayrad,

I have a few questions.

On the “Who Did You See In Concert In 2022” thread, we exchanged comments regarding Confidence Man, Glastonbury, Green Man, End Of The Road, Festival No.6 etc.

I was the first timer for Green Man last year and had a fabulous time there. I hoped to attend this year, too, but had to pull out due to some difficulties.
How was GM 2023? Was it as good as last year (or the proceeding years for that matter)?

I think you attended End Of The Road for the first time this year. What do you make of it — in particular, as compared with GM? Which one do you prefer if you have to choose one to attend in the future, generally speaking?

I’d be grateful for your thoughts on these matters.

You reach a stage of your of your life where you have seen many bands over the years.Seen that done that. And many of the live acts and bands are either no more or a shadow of their past.
Saying that I did see Kiss and Lady Ga Ga for my most recent gigs. And both were great evenings out.
Still hoping to see Cher if she tours. And haven’t ruled out seeing the Rolling Stones next year.
Less is more.

hi risingstone

apolgies for the late reply - i've only just seen your post!

EOTR edged it for me this year

but honestly, it's difficult to choose between them

i think the novely of EOTR (it was our first time there - but we've been going to GM since 2005) made a big difference

plus this year's EOTR bill was much stronger for me personally than GM's

but i think that's really just luck of the draw year by year

there's always a lot to enjoy at both

and despite not thinking much of the GM bill in advance, i ended up having a great time

you've been to GM - so you know what the really big draw is there - the site itself

it's just in such a beautiful part of the world

and the mountain rising up behind the main stage is pretty hard to beat

saying that, EOTR's location at larmer tree gardens is also gorgeous

peacocks wandering around - and the forested area that contains a bunch of the smaller stages - add something really magical

once upon a time the two festivals shared a lot of acts year by year - certainly outside of headliners and immediate subs on each stage

but the bookers seem to be conferring a lot more in recent times - as they've realised there's so much crossover in their attendees

very few acts appear at both in the same year now

we did get one very wet day at GM this year - biblical, in fact

which is always more likely at GM, given its location

2022 was gorgeous all weekend, if i remember - so you may have been eased in with a slightly false sense of the usual conditions!

whereas EOTR tends to have good weather, being that much further south - and not surrounded by mountains!

(everyone - and i mean EVERYONE - goes on about how cold it gets at night at EOTR. due to the clear skies that make it so nice during the day. but this year was uncommonly warm overnight - so we may get surprised by that next year)

in terms of the overall vibe, i'd say the two festivals are about on a par

people are, in general, unfailingly nice

GM gets a younger, post exam crowd (teenagers celebrating the end of GCSEs) - so it can get a bit lairy at night

but nothing untoward

certainly easier than the push and shove in a stones pit!

didn't sense that element at all at EOTR

one of things i love about GM is the number of little kids

it makes for a generally good atmosphere - as who's going to start a punch up around a bunch of pre-schoolers?

(it also gave rise to one of my all time favourite GM experiences this year. being up the front at amyl and the sniffers, and amy being her ususal full-on 'f@ck you if you can't handle me' fantastic self. then turning round to look back at the crowd and seeing a row of 6-10 year old girls on their mum's and dad's shoulders, staring back at the stage in completely delighted disbelief. that this was not only an acceptable way for a woman to behave - but that it actually got you the headline slot at a great big festival. god bless those parents for letting their daughters stay up for that - and carrying them into the midst of what was a VERY excitable crowd. none of those girls went home the same)

there are kids at EOTR - but fewer - as it's right on the edge of back to school for the autumn term

and i felt that there were consequently fewer of the middle-class parents who are just there for a jolly - and stand right at the front of the stages having a chat about barbeques and PTA meetings while the band's on...

(love the kids - not so keen on the parents... except the ones who took their offspring to amyl & the sniffers, obvs!)

but again - these are little differences that don't really swing it one way or the other if i had to choose

luckily, i don't - and we'll be going to both again next year

anyway - better stop this, or we'll be getting told off for going off topic!

but if you want to know anything else, drop me a private message

very happy to help if i can

cheers
ray

Hi rayrad,

Many thanks for your long post and detailed comments on GM/EOTR. It was way more than I expected to receive, and I’m digesting all the insightful information you delivered.

As you know, GM is scheduled in the third weekend of August whereas EOTR the fifth weekend of the same month or the first weekend of September, which makes it rather tricky for festival-goers to attend both. For the majority, it is a matter of “one or the other”.

At this moment, I am planning to go back to GM rather than EOTR next year. Hope the weather will be fine all the way as in 2022 that I attended, about which many folks told me, “This is unusual. You are lucky.”

My first time experience and impression of GM is that it reminded me of Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival in that both are situated in beautiful settings surrounded by the mountains. Fuji is way bigger, though.
