This is a favorite "B-side" story: George needed a B-side song for a single from his Cloud 9 album. He asked Jeff Lynne for some help. Orbinson got involved. Bob had a garage to record in, but George's guitar was at Petty's house, so he ended up coming along. Ironically, the song "Handle Me With Care" was deemed too good for B-side and a new band was created. The image of driving around LA assembling friends amuses me. We used to do the same thing to have a pick-up basketball game.
