OT: Best B-Sides Albums Ever (Not by the Stones)

Listening to The Smashing Pumpkins’ Pisces Iscariot today made me think. What are the best (non-Stones) b-sides albums?

Oasis - The Masterplan

In fact, the first two albums and this are the best of their entire catalogue IMHO.

One of my favorites is R.E.M.'s "Dead Letter Office"

This particular subject is one of the things that irks me the most about the Stones catalog LOL.

Past Masters Volume 1 & 2 - The Beatles

Okay, so these compilations are not strictly B-sides only, but a collection of all non-album tracks. It still fits the criteria, though.

"… Time everlasting
Time to play b sides
Time ain't on my side
Time I'll never know"

Just a snippet of lyric from Burnin' For You (Blue Öyster Cult)

TIME TO PLAY B SIDES

Long As I Can See the Light by Creedence Clearwater Revival on the flipside of Lookin' Out My Back Door from 1970. It's of course written by John Fogerty who also plays the Wurlitzer electric piano and saxophone in addition to an amazing vocal performance.

Sometimes treasures are hidden on b-sides.

They absolutely are. One of the sadder consequences of the demise of the single, is that we've lost the B-side. The Stones, Beatles, et al, were part of a truly fantastic period, whereby artists and acts genuinely cared and thought about the upcoming single's flip-side. Oasis, in my opinion, were the last group to really put in the effort. The Masterplan being testament to that.

Radiohead Airbag EP is top-notch. It's a single with a handful of stellar b-sides.

Radiohead's My Iron Lung EP also...

"Beck's Bolero," the greatest rock instrumental of all time, was the B-side of the dreadful "Hi Ho Silver Lining." That was in March 1967, more than a year before it appeared on the Truth LP.

As a Jeff Beck admirer for 40+ years I must confess that it's only 1 year ago I found out that "Hi Ho Silver Lining" is a Jeff-thing. I could sing along with this catchy tune almost from the date it was released. smoking smiley

Now we still need the Grace Potter version of the song - for further comparison.
Dua Lipa’s take is amazing. Had to watch the Barbie movie last night with my child, heard her sing, couldn‘t relate to it. Or her. Now this, Wow! Still Beth Hart is one powerful, hot (in every sense) singer and I love her version.
More, please!

Cheers, Fillmore

The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow
Nirvana - Incesticide

Both not entirely B-sides, also some outtakes etc.

Both The Smiths’ Hateful of Hollow and the follow-up, The World Won’t Listen, are terrific collections of non-album tracks: A-sides, B-sides, and in the case of the former, radio sessions.

The first 45 single I bought was Dylans Like a Rolling Stone. The B side was Rainy Day Woman. I think I listened to once and not even all the way through. It took many years, maybe a decade after that for me to start listening to it and learning it. I think I will listen to it now!!!

When it comes to Smashing Pumpkins I recommend "The Aeroplane Flies High" - collection of B sides all from "Mellon Collie". Terrific set showing that "Mellon Collie" could've been easily a 3CD album and still awesome!

I second that! Can’t believe I forgot that. SP was my favorite band as a teenager. Set the Ray to Jerry. Cherry. Pennies for Sale. So many gems on that one!
