Mahalia Jackson is another we should have mentioned by now. You definitely want to check her out, especially if you have an interest in blues and jazz vocalists. She had an influence on soul music. She had a big impact on Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin. I believe she is in the rock 'n roll hall of fame. I have a couple of her comps.

If you like Christmas music:
Silent Night

Do you like the Marx Brothers?
With Harpo Marx on Piano

Love Mahalia! One of my favorite songs by her: The Upper Room

"Black, Brown and Beige" with Duke Ellington is also a great album.

Aretha Franklin was already mentioned. The Amazing Grace concert film is excellent. You have the connection between gospel and soul. Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts were there one night. I have the Blu-ray.

Someone posted "Soul's Chapel" by Marty Stuart. Oh, what a great collection of Southern soul/gospel/country which can all be sort of the same thing. The guitar work on this album is stunning, IMHO. Marty's doing "The Weight" with The Staple Singers as his duet partners is also worth checking out. Also, George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" (a hymn for all faiths) and the Edwin Hawkins Singers "Oh Happy Day" which is rockin' gospel. I love this song and play it loud.

Oh, man, forgot to note "Keep Your Head To The Sky" by Earth Wind and Fire is a great contemporary gospel song. Give it a blast.

Some good recommendations here.
I thought this was a great compilation and a good intro to the genre: “Speciality Gospel Twofer: Greatest Gospel Gems”

2 albums on one CD. I just checked Amazon and it’s crazy cheap at $3.53 US

This one always rivets me.......... circa 1940

Led all the way by the mighty R.H.Harris ...
who somehow here leads us to back rooms of his soul ... Mighty stuff

Harris was a massive influence on Sam Cooke so
much so that by the early 50's Cooke joined The Soul Stirrers ...

Whenever I visit this page, something else that we should have mentioned pops into my head.

Blind Willie Johnson recorded the type of blues/gospel that influenced the Stones. I would be surprised if Mick and Keith have not listened to him.

Try:
Dark Was the Night, Cold was the Ground

Ry Cooder covered it and later used it as the basis for his Paris, Texas soundtrack.
