I see that Amazon is delaying some shipments of the new album. I live in NJ USA. What chain stores still sell CDs? Barnes & Noble? Best Buy? Where can I buy it on Friday if Amazon is delayed?

You can check if your local B&N will have it in store at that link. I don’t think the site will be updated until the CDs are in stores on the shelf, so try the link on Friday and it should tell if they’re available in the store near you.

Very few chains carry music anymore. Best to find an independent record store in your area.

I feel like you will have better luck with Vinyl than CD. Box Stores seem to get about 5 CDs in per release. Barnes and Noble seem to get many more. If going to Target or Walmart, I'd go as soon as they open. B&N usually has a buy now and pick up later option. That is probably what route I am going. Better safe that way then taking a chance with Target, Wal-mart etc.

...but if I sneak off and buy another copy from HMV on Fri/Sat...the dragon indoors will kill me [probably twice ]

I just spoke with someone at one of my local record shops here in Nova Scotia. His quote, "Universal has been having a lot of issues as of late with product." So I'm not entirely hopeful that I'll be picking up a physical release on Friday but I'm also not super interested in my first listen being on Spotify.
He's going to update me when they get stock.

I've just cancelled my black vinyl from Amazon and will be making the trip to HMV 9am Friday.

OK, let's just take a minute to think how crazy this is. 15 years ago stones were open at Midnight for major releases. Even if you didn't go to a Midnight sale, the next morning you could have had about 15 plus options of where to go to buy a physical copy. Now, there is no garuntee there will even be physical copies available at the very few stores that even still carry CDs/LPs. Things changed very fast....

In Germany there're at least three midnight sales - [iorr.org] - and there're also 6 different physical releases available (incl. Carnaby Red Vinyl).

The above described problems buying CDs or the delivery delays by Amazon.com seem to affect the US market (only).


For comparison: 2023H1 music market revenues in the United States were 84% streaming, 11% physical and 3% downloads - [www.RIAA.com] - (PDF).

In Germany, 2022 music market revenues were 73.3% streaming, 12.9% CD, 6% Vinyl, 2.2% downloads - [www.Musikindustrie.de] .

Just looked at my local Walmart to buy in person and price is $48.
Gonna stick with mail order and wait it out

I don't doubt that's what you're seeing, but I just looked again, yes am in U.S. and put in my local stores zip code, and Walmart page shows $48.02 for Hackney Diamonds vinyl.. Mistake maybe, who knows

Update...

... Got e-mails from HMV yesterday [Tues] to say that LP and CD have both been despatched, so should have it on Friday ..Saturday at the very latest.

Now I feel very ashamed for having no faith.
