I think "The" was more commonly used in the 60s and 70s because it was trendy at the time (The Beatles, The Who, The Doobie Brothers, etc). The Stones have used either version in the past and still can't seem to make up their minds. The website is rollingstones.com, the webshop is therollingstonesshop.com

I didn’t mean they’ve ONLY used “Rolling Stones” since the Sixties-only that they’ve used it on albums since the Sixties.

There are exceptions, but I think that mainly:

It's "THE Rolling Stones" when someone is SPEAKING about the band.

For branding etc... Rolling Stones (omitting "The") is used mainly in PRINT.
