At the age of 79 the founder of the Groundhogs died on Tuesday 6th June. The band supported the Rolling Stones on their 1971 tour. McPhee had a very distinctive guitar style. The Groundhog's most acclaimed work was from the late 60s through the seventies.. with albums such as Blues Obituary, Thank Christ For The Bomb, Split, Hogwash, Who Will Save The World, Solid.. etc. He also found time to release several solo albums.
RIP Tony Mcphee.

Sad news. I still have my original vinyl copies of Split and Thank Christ for the Bomb. I saw the Groundhogs at the ‘Leeds Lungs’ gig way back. I met Tony once at a club gig, in fact we stood next to each other in the toilets and chatted about Eccentric Man, which was an early single and which I still play today.

Tony and his band backed many visiting blues musicians back in the day, John Lee Hooker I think and probably many more.

Rest well, Tony. Another good man gone.

Some of the first things I learnt on guitar as a kid were Tony McPhee licks.
