Re: OT- RIP. Sad but necessary advice on Bob Dylan songs

FWIW, I tried "channeling" your friends spirit...

By far I got the strongest responses on the following songs:

Blowin' in the Wind

Tomorrow is a Long Time

And... If Not For You...

If you just let your heart "guide" you on these 3 songs, I'm sure you'll find a very appropriate tune for the occasion. Part memory, part celebration...

BTW, if he's a major Dylan fan, his spirit's gonna want more than just ONE SONG at the gathering ! Why not pick a couple ??

"It's just that demon life has got me in it's sway..."

Open-G.

How did the funeral go. What did you end up playing, and how did it go over?

Hope all is well.
Cindy

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

if he fits the description of most 'major' Dylan fans I know, he'll probably want to hear something very obscure!

My condolences.

I kind of dislike Dylan but I like Blownin' In The Wind. It's very pure... the harmonica is false but appropriate.

Now i've travelled down from Berlin to Frankfurt
- nothing comes out like planned, but thats no suprise, is it?.

I talked to Kaj's lady, Ulla (would have been together 25years ,soon), and relatives and friends.
I had allmost every song you mentioned with me on cd, and I had printed out this thread just to show how people care and understand - but when I sat down with Ulla to do the "setlist" for the services, she told me she had been talking with Kaj.

He made a sign, with a little twinkelin' bell - and that was it.

"Ring Them Bells"

thats the only Dylan song beeing played. I didn't know it before, but when I heard it, yes, it's absolutely YES.

I contributed the instrumental intro

"Hope on Board" Tom Petty

then

opening words by Pastor Georgi

Improvisation on flute by Cornelia, from a wellknown classical orchestra, and close friend.

Then,
three more friends playing "House on the Hill"
(hope they do it well, cause I'm the only 1 , left)

Pastor Georgi - poem

"Steh' nicht weinend an meinem Grab"
salvation

Bob Dylan "Ring them Bells"

outro & farewell

Ry Cooder
"Archie's funeral" (i edited out the preacher.)
"Dark is the Night"
"Feeling bad blues"

I intervened against 20 min. of Mile Davis.
so now its Ry Cooder's 3 songs repeated, 'till everyone had time to say "farewell"

I must say, this thread was highly apreciated by people who never knew about this board, and also I want to thank you, once again.

now I must stand monday morning

Cindy,
it's not done yet
I did cheer up Kaj's girl and her mother & friends with Lorenz's thread [iorr.org]
but still - I was crying in the subway, in a town i'm not used to any more.
The funeral will be on monday morning. I have to survive that.
I'll be home tuesday maybe wednesday - go, ask me again

You put a lot of thought into making this meaningful and special. I'm sure somewhere Kaj is smiling down on you gratefully.

You know what would be really nice? If you could type up some stories about some memorable times you had with Kaj for his daughter. I can't tell you how happy it makes me when someone tells me a funny story about something my mother did. And I think she would really appreciate knowing that we remember the real her, not just as it was in the end when she was sick.

I'm sure Kaj is smiling down on me gratefully, - but Ulla first of all.

Cindy, I think you got "Kaj's girl" wrong. I meant Ulla, his girlfriend, being together for 25 years, but not beeing married. no kids, you see

but that makes no difference in writing about some funny moments we had.
and we did have - I've looked through a big case of photos.
There are lots of moments I'd never recall - but he had them.

Do I hear you grieving about your mum? Big Hug, Cindy.

if this makes no sense to you - please forgive me for now.
I'll need to clear my mind - in a few days

You MUST play:

Ring them bells

from the "Oh Mercy" album.

It will set the right tone.
