Johnny Cash Movie

Just got back from watching "Walk the Line". Just curious what the astute music lover's here at IORR think. I grew up listening to Cash's live record with the headphones blasting. Eventually Cash and Elvis lead to the Stones, for me. I really wanted to see more about the live show's in the jailhouses. I think Phoenix did a great job considering the enormous personality of Cash. It's worth a couple of hours if you are a fan. Some great scenes depicting the antics of Elvis, Jerry Lee, Waylon, etc...
Imagine trying to make a movie about the Stones? A lot of headaches on that set.

Really? I'm not so sure that that's the line I'd draw, as much as I like Cash and Elvis. For me, I'd put a few bluesmen in there, or as Willie Dixon said . . .

Blues is the roots
Everything else is the fruits

I was speaking on a personal basis. That's the records that were around my house before I was old enough to buy my own.

My mistake . . . I missed the intent of the "for me" part of your sentence. Sorry.

Nonetheless, I like Willie's line.

Cheers.

Did the Stones ever do a Cash song? Not that I can think of. Big River I know was covered by a lot of bands but I don't think the Stones ever did.

I haven't seen it yet, is it worth while to go see? Or too much Hollywood hollow dramatics ?

There is a bit of a love story and drug addiction story that slows the movie down a bit. But considering the rest of the crap that Hollywood puts out, it's worth a visit to the big screen.

I just got back from seeing the movie and really enjoyed it. I'm not much of a Johnny Cash fan, but it was a very good movie. I'd say it was on par with last year's "Ray" movie.

I hope it is not like "Ray". Ray was totally by the numbers. Yawn.

Didn't Mick mention that the Stones did a couple of Cash numbers early in their career when he was interviewed shortly after Cash's death? I'm not familiar with alot of Cash's music so I'm not sure what songs they may have done.

I recall reading that Brian was a big Johnny Cash fan.

I still think they should use "Burning ring of fire" in a heomarroid commercial.

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

Some company actually did put one out and the Cash / Carter Family put a stop to it!

I know - that's what I was referring to.

No sense of humour.

I don't believe the Stones ever did a Johnny Cash song...but Johnny did cover 'No Expectations'. It can be found on 'The Essential Johnny Cash (1955-1983): Volume 3'.

BTW...I saw the movie last night and really liked it. I'm a Cash fan, and I thought Joaquin Phoenix did a great job...nailed some of his mannerisms. Reese Witherspoon was very good too. Impressive singing...considering they had never sang before.

In their early live shows the Stones did 2 Johnny Cash songs, I Walk the Line and the Ballad of a Teenage Queen.

I saw it last week..thought Phoenix did a great job in a tough role..Reese was
ok...difference here was Phoenix sang the songs unlike Jamie Fox in Ray which
was dubbed from Ray Charles..both Ray and Johnny were haunted through life
with drugs and death of a brother at an early age..the prison scenes were
outstanding..I think Cash would have approved...

I wish they'd just do a movie on the prison scene. I'd buy that DVD if it was done right. I liked they way this one looked. Great energy in that jailhouse.

I can't wait to see the movie. Yes, my mom's Johnny Cash album was one of the first albums I ever became obsessed with. I don't remember which one it was, I think it was some kind of compilation, I remember I Walk the Line and A Boy Named Sue was on it. That album and an Ike and Tine Turner album and a Platters (of all things!) album eventually lead to my Stones obsession.

Thanks for bringing back some memories.
