Double Door Club Gig - 25th anniversary

Sept 18 1997 - the Rolling Stones perform at the small Double Door Club in Chicago five days before the B2B tour opening at Soldier Field.

If you were there and are willing to share memories... this is the time and this is the place.

Well, flew in from Germany that day with some friends.
Checked in our hotel and went to Soldier Field to check things out.
It was before getting Stones info in real time on the internet, so we had no clue.
Went back to our hotel, switched on the TV and.... what the FU%&$§ ?
Jumped right into a cab and drove to Double Door.
Of course couldn't get inside but were standing right at the open door to listen
to the show from outside with a few thousand people.
Amazing experience, a real surprise gig for me.

Those were the days....

My friends worked at Double Door. I couldn't even get into the show that day. 1 of my girlfriends served Keith a drink at the downstairs bar. The Double Door employees were not told who was playing and thought it would be Motley Crue.

A really good show. Wasn’t it filmed with only the one camera, though? Or, at least, with only a couple.

The club gig was shot by a local professional team of 5 cameramen hired by New York based Second Coming Productions, one of which standing on the small stage with the Stones, left side. Second Coming was also in charge of distributing an edited selection via VHS tapes to the press for promotional purposes [for the B2B tour].

More infos here.

A release "From the Vault" would definitely make sense, considering the large share of hardcore fans among the Stones' worldwide clientele.

I was lucky enough to see Freddy outside and he got me in. Not sure why he did that for me as I barely knew him, but he went to the door and got JC to tell the local bouncer to let me in and next thing you know I'm in. He mumbled something about the action outside interested him more as he stayed behind and I went in.

The show and my memory of it is like a surreal blur, except I remember the setlist was special and Keith's guitar sounded especially cool and I was drenched in sweat when it was over.

Just watched the video on YouTube and brings back the memory of one of many great shows I've seen the Stones play since my first in Chicago in 1975.

The original Double Door on Milwaukee Ave in Wicker Park is now a Yeti store. Original location closed bc landlord issue and neighborhood gentrification. I spent a lot of time at original Double Door.
Double Door will open their new location in Uptown neighborhood soon.

Boring. Bad sound. Low energy. 1000:s of other shows and songs I prefer on youtube.

Really?
I don't share the general enthusiasm about this gig. Like all other club-gigs the band was rusted and was not playing great (okay the Jimmy Reed cover is nice).

In retrospect these pre-tour gigs served one purpose : generate an insane amount of media cover for the band i.e. tons of free publicity (worth millions) for the coming tour.

And footage of thrilled fans being interviewed after the gig as well as images of "disappointed masses who couldn't enter the club" added another brick in the "greatest rock band ever" wall.

That was well-thought Mick! >grinning smiley<

I think they did not sound good throughout the tour, I do not know if at that time they had changed the sound engineer or what the hell was going on, because the guitars sounded very bad in many shows, or there were even shows where the guitars were not heard or stopped working
