Can't understand why The Stones waited so long before releasing Rock And Roll Circus. They're excellent. I especially love the versions of JJF, YCAGWYW, SFTD, No Expectations and - very important - Salt of the Earth. Keith's guitar sounds so good. And he plays so well - notice his new "tricks" on JJF & YCAGWYW!
The choir on Salt I assume is not live. Anyway, they sing it so well, I prefer both No Expectations and Salt on RARC before the BB versions. Salt on RARC is a beauty.
Salt Is Not Dead. no no i mean: on the Circus Salt of the Earth, everything but the Glimmer Twins' vocals is playback. it's very fine, of course! i especially enjoy the way they're tussling over the lyrics sheet. :E
I miss the other versions of JJF; I have read in the booklet they did five takes of JJF and some blues numbers (e.g. "Confession the blues" and some Robert Johnson blues). Otherwise you are right it is great, particularly "Parachute Woman" is almost a new song live in the Circus. But I'm sorry the version of "Salt" is - I guess - a instrumental playback with live vocals.
Rock & Roll circus was prevented by Mick Jagger from release for 35 years. He was sorely dis-appointed with the Stones sound and performance over the 2 day shoot and was concerned that they had been eclipsed by the Who's slot. Now the Stones were supposed to be the stars of the show and not the 'Who' It was'n't until 3 decades later once the Stones R&R Circus performance had been equalised by digital wizardy that Mick allowed it to be released.

No, you are wrong definitely, the slide of Brian is different from the studio take, and there are differences concerning the acoustic guitar of Keith Richards. The only song which isn't live is "Salt of the Earth". It is instrumental playback with live vocals I think.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree. To my eyes and ears, the sound doesn't match the visuals..... What you hear when Keith 'strums' the info doesn't fit what you see, the rhythm you hear doesn't fit the rhythm of his right hand. It's possible I guess that they dubbed the best version sound wise over the best performance, But I am convinced that what is on the dvd is not a live performance.
I do seem to be in the minority though......... anyone else got an opinion on this?
No Expectations is live, no doubt about it. I agree Keith's intro lookes weird, but that has most likely to do with editing the right images with the right sound track. Gimme Shelter and L&G all have this to some extent. Remember, it wasn't the digital age yet.
And indeed, Jones open E guitar on No Expectations is out of tune.

Didn't saw the DVD, but heard only the CD. So I can't say whether I agree or not. But the version of "No Expectation" I've heard on CD isn't the studio tape definitely.
Salt is playback and Keith is playing but if theres no mike you wont hear it. Brians guitar is out of tune but he plays well. Did KEith overdub with his own on BB? I dont think so and besides Brian was the slide guitarist. Keithhas another style which suited Midnight perfect. Riffin on slide. Love that.
r'n'r circus is an incredible testament, visionnary, all the symbolic, the progression of the acts, it's a beautiful voodoo tent show, you can feel the atmosphere, something is happening …the stones at a crossroad and this is the end for brian, it's out of tune but that's the rolling stones, lovely
