O/T: storing audio files on DVDs

Is this possible?
I burned an experimental audio DVD, but when I went to access the files they had all been converted to a video format.
Thanks to DAD and Rocks Off I have an external 250GB that is almost full.
The water level is rising rapidly and I am beginning to panic.
Would like to have as little physical storage components as possible.
Any sane and sound advice would, as usual, be greatly appreciated.......
