I find Ronnie's playing on Hot Stuff excellent. Fantastic version, too.

Saying that he is «funbling through» the track isn't correct. I suspect you rather mean that you don't like his style.

Still scratching my head trying to find out what's not to like with this version - if one likes this song at all, that is. If that's not the case, sure Ronnie can't help - but then probably nobody can.

Great version. As he does on most of LYL, Ronnie plays very well.

And questioning the hiring decisions of the biggest band in the world 50 years ago, 50 years later seems preposterous.

Wembley 1973 would be a fantastic release if given the El Mocambo treatment

+1

I was just reading how Tumbling Dice and Hot Stuff were released ahead of this album coming out. I'm kind of surprised that these two songs weren't officially released as a physical single anywhere - even as a RSD item perhaps.

They weren't right?? Hoping I didn't miss another release!

That's a shame. A missed opportunity for a nice little RSD 45". Thanks Irix.

Agreed. El Mocambo is the greatest Stones release in over forty years.

Evidently not ..perhaps one of the reasons this took so long to see the light of day.

It's been a crime for many years...but all is forgiven now that we have it grinning smiley

Hot Stuff is the best song on here - the band on fire, nasty. The Ron Wood-era of the Rolling Stones is my favorite. In 1981, we got 'If I was a Dancer (Dance Pt. 2)' - amazing song.

Incidentally, I remember seeing the next live attempt of Hot Stuff in 1994 in Washington D.C. Given how smoking hot the El Mocambo version is, not surprised the band gave it another shot 17 years later... listening to Cherry Oh Baby now - demo version!

TUMBLING DICE question:

why did they play it in a lower key? Also 75/76? in 73 and later they played the key from the studio version. Just wondering. Usually the do not really change keys. Still play JJF, HTW etc in the same key.

Maybe because Jagger feels more comfortable to sing in a lower key.
Playing HTW in another key ruins the effect of the open strings played by Richards I would think.

LSTNT in a different key raised my eyebrows even more.

To facilitate Jagger's voice. Strangely the key of B has always been just a tad too high for him when the song goes to F#, like in JJF. IOPR, TD, RTJ, Happy and JJF all have been played in Bflat.

I like listening to this Worried About You back to back with the Licks version. Interesting to hear the similarities and differences.

Keith played Happy in A on the MAIN OFFENDER tour.

He has played it in A several times with the Stones as well. It just doesn't sound right.

Today I received the El Mocambo 4 LP black vinyl set after having the CD set for a few years now.

Regarding the packaging, it strikes me as odd that the inner sleeves writing are up side down or backwards depending on how you are viewing them.
For example opening the inner cardboard sleeve, part one narrative is on the left, part 2 on the right, but disc 1 goes in the part 2 section and disc 2 inserts in to the part 1 section.
Also unlike the CD there is no booklet.
I must say the vinyl sound has a littel more club feel and slightly less arena sound.

Is this packaging the same for all of you or do I have an oddity?

Same here.

Agree that the sound is a bit more dense as well.

Unfortunately some bits of audience interaction are missing on the vinyl, most notably the "little-known number we hope to make popular" Luxury (at the end of Melody...)

thanks for the response and heads up, didn't get to that disc yet.

so everyone's packaging is upside down then?

But there is also something more on the vinyl, after Luxury. Listen closely!

JJF on this album is just frantic. I love it.
