Saw Karl Denson and his band Tiny Universe with special guest Bernard Fowler play a night of Bowie tunes Friday in Seattle. With added backup singers, the band played a selection mostly from Bowie's mid 70's funk/soul period (with plenty of sax of course), but also delved into some rocking Ziggy-era material. Bernard and Karl shared vocal duties, and band members didn't shy away from taking extended solos. Bernard is a great frontman and really does the material justice. So does Karl. They also couldn't resist mentioning that after being in the Stones for so many years (especially Bernard), it was great to be in a band where they "don't get sent to the principal's office" if they screw up (and, yes, there were instances of vocal and musical flubs).
They're only doing the Bowie tribute on a few select dates, so if you're in Vegas (2/12), San Francisco (3/05) or NOLA Jazzfest (5/05), check it out.
